NHL.com rates best Defensemen - Gio in at #9
Top 14 defensemen excel at both ends of the ice

Perhaps no player in the NHL benefited from the advent of advanced statistics to show the merits of his game last season more than Giordano. According to stats.hockeyanalysis.com, there were nine Flames forwards who played at least 200 minutes at 5-on-5 with Giordano. All nine saw their Corsi-for percentage, measuring shot attempts for and against, plunge dramatically when they were on the ice without Giordano. The average drop was a whopping 11.1 percent. On top of that, Giordano had the third-highest points-per-game average among NHL defensemen, behind only Karlsson and Keith.

Karlsson is too high (unless they're fantasy ratings, in which case he's too low). It's cool that he can score 70 points, but he should not be ranked higher than Suter or Pietrangelo.

Kind of funny that one guy had Gio at #4 and the other three guys ranked him at #12.
Obviously that guy that ranked him at #4 watched Gio a lot last year, where the others must not have.

It's good that he's finally getting a little more recognition around the league. So if he can play this whole season like he played last season will people around the league take notice and give him that "elite" or "#1" status? If he falters a little will it be blown out of proportion?

He had a very good PPG this year even with the injury, so at that pace he's easily in the mix for Norris next year. The advanced stats don't lie either.
If he falters a bit I don't think it would be blown out of proportion, but we would have people questioning exactly how long his shelf life is or whether last season was simply an anomaly.

Jake Muzzin, who has a full 132 games, gets a vote over players like Bouwmeester? Terrible.
Muzzin has potential to be good but he's no where close to many defenseman today.

....but we will rate him 9th cuz he wasn't a 1st or 2nd rounder and plays on a crappy team.

I feel bad for the guy due to the timing ...
Seems like his stock was rising last year, but too late for the Olympics. If the Olympics happened this year he'd be a pretty good bet to make the club.

We have a small sample size of him playing at an elite level so 9th is a reasonable spot to be at.
Alex Steen is the same story at forward, a guy who at 30 years old has an elite season for the first time in his career, and has it cut short by injury. He's ranked 10th among LWers.

This. If Gio has another Norris calibre year, I expect he'll creep into the top 5.

I think this is pretty accurate. Gio is on the bubble of being a truly elite defenseman. If he has another great season he'll be in the same conversation as the names above him. Love it

The issue is it isn't an apples to apples comparison. I would say Karlsson plays a different position - a rover on the ice. Comparing him to Suter or Pietrangelo is not too different from trying to compare him to a forward. It just isn't the same thing.
I don't know if Karlsson currently has a comparative in the league - Mike Green from 5 years ago or so is the closest.
