Also, I think economics has played a major role in the need for geoscientists. The relatively low price for natural gas recently, the rising cost in all aspects of the industry, and the over regulation has tended to hamper many companies...particularly the small to medium ones.
Also, whereas in the old days companies preferred geologists with BSc's, many companies (particularly the majors) now expect MSc's or PhD's at a minimum, as the field is becoming much more specialized.
For those not willing to take post grad, you may consider taking jobs in the service industry, where the experience will be useful to have when you can find a job in the geoscience field.
