- during hockey season I constantly use the snap feature to have the game I only have a passing interest in running in the corner while I play. I setup the kinnect with the dishwasher running and cranking the volume and have few voice command issues including Xbox On. Maybe have to repeat myself once a day with extended use time. Use it all the time to change TV channels.
-Use it extensively for Skype. I like how it follows the people in the room and zooms in to the person talking. Also a nice wide angle.
-and we use it as a family for the Dance 2014 game. What can i say the kids love it.
I think it's more than worth the extra cost so far. But I'm lazy and often lose the dish remote.

I'm planning on picking up an Xbox One this weekend in preparation for the release of NHL 15. Just a question for the gamers in this thread that are far more in the know about these things: is getting the Kinect device worth it? Is it going to become an integral part of games and the system going forward, or does it just project to be the same novelty dust collector that its predecessor was? As a student, if I can save $100 now and not regret it then I will be happy.
Looks like if you pick up an XBone from Target/Superstore/Walmart, you could get NHL15 for free.
A lot of people may not know this, but the PS4 does actually have voice commands.
it does but it isn't as extensive from what I gather and it's really a lot of the other features that make the Kinnect/voice command combo quite nice (Skype, snap/unsnap, TV control etc). For me it isn't a throw in I paid extra for and never use. I though it very well would be that but it is an integral part of the experience after all (IMHO).
Not 100% on what they do in regards to the fact that the titles are preorder based for now, but I'd recommend going in to a local store and seeing if you can either:
A) purchase the xbone beforehand and apply the promotion on release date after the fact
B) be guaranteed NHL15 on release date (assuming you wanted it right away)

Awesome. Thanks for this.
I'm not too concerned about having a copy available on the 9th (there are always plenty), but I would like to have the console over the weekend to play around with.
I'll stop at either Walmart or Superstore on Friday and check it out.

Its on their online flyer $399, pretty sweet deal.
PS4 with The last of us and the free game also a sweet deal at $499
Kinect is a mixed bag. The best part is the voice commands, although I really only predominantly use around 4 commands: things like "xbox pause", "xbox mute", "xbox turn off", and "xbox record that". (Xbox On rarely works properly). Also if you want to skype on your tv its good to have.
You likely need to calibrate the microphone.
I made the mistake setting mine up of making sure the room was whisper quiet, and it made the voice commands more 'miss' than 'hit' in normal use conditions. When I calibrated again, I opened the patio door (I live downtown so it's noisy) and made sure the air conditioning was running. Now it's virtually flawless. But the calibration is a big part of it. Try that and see if it fixes the issue.

Yes. Same thing happened to me on first calibration. The second time around was when I made sure the dishwasher was running, the furnace was on, and kids were playing in the background. Also turn the volume way up during calibration I believe.
I see more caucasian than Japanese in that picture. Should have been "Packed with cauc. Xbox fans".

It's a pretty bad (or awesome?) troll job actually on the Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer.
The photo shopped crowd is actually pulled from the horrible repetitive 2D cardboard cutouts from Forza 5. There was a brouhaha when they downgraded the graphics from what they showed originally. The crowd is basically the same flat sample picture of 20-30 people over and over again.
