Default Concrete in the river by calf robe being cleaned up....

Anyone else notice this last couple days?

Ever since the flood, there's been a big pile of old concrete slabs sitting a third or so of the way out from shore, a few hundred yards or so south of calf robe bridge. Before the flood, it was part of the shore as the flood washed that part of the shore away and made this big pile a little island. I remember it from rafting by it lots of times. There was also tons of shattered glass along there too.

So anyway, driving by it the last couple days I noticed that crews are cleaning it up....looks like part of the shore rehab that they've been doing along there all summer. All that shattered glass actually looked like it might just have been an old party spot along the river for years before deerfoot was built....there was a helluva lot of it though.

I always wondered what might have been there before. Anyone remember or know?

Looking at Google Earth and the historic imagery there, it looks like it's always been a kind of gravelbar when the water is low (assuming I'm looking at the right spot)

As for the glass, I assume that's remnants of some damage from the flood. Walking along the Bow at Lafarge Meadows, I notice there's a lot of broken plastic bit washed up.

This leads me to a question I've been wondering for a while. All those houses we saw get washed away by the flood... where did they end up? I'm not sure where the Bow eventually slows down, but there must have been a ton of wood, siding, concrete, household appliances and other assorted junk all washed up somewhere.

If you look at google maps from above, it's on the west bank, right before a creek. Google hasn't updated since the flood so you can see the concrete pieces as part of that shore. It is now a little narrow island since the flood washed that shore away which the concrete was laying on/against.

The broken glass was there before the flood. It was like thousands of old shattered beer, pop, etc. bottles. Anybody that boated, rafted or fished along there would know what I mean. It was hard to miss. The whole bank sparkled from the sun hitting the glass. It looked to me like it was from years of partyers, but curious about what must have been there at one time.

My grandfather told me that's where the olde bottle smashing district used to be.

Also, I've noticed that just south of the blackfoot/17th ave bridge over the Bow there are a couple of old bridge (?) footings uncovered that now lurk just beneath the surface.

^ Cool. Never new there was such a "district". Would be interesting to know more.

As far as those footings go beside Blackfoot....I know there was (maybe still?) an abutment on both sides. They were part of the old bridge that was replaced. They've been there as long as I remember. Over 40 years, probably a lot longer than that. I'd assume the footings you're talking about would be part of that old bridge.
