What United desperately need to learn is selling players, they are effing awful at that. The fact that they received less (!!!) money for Welbeck and Kagawa combined than Southampton did for Lallana alone is shameful.
And that's on Woodward. LVG's task isn't to sell. That's on the Chairman.
Welbeck to one of our biggest foes, who desperately needed a player like him?

Again, that's on Woodward.

Honestly, the biggest head scratcher all summer was Kroos. Christ, back up the truck to him. He joins, and United should be back in Europe next season.

Yup in day one Woodward should have backed up the truck to Kroos and Vidal.

Get those two and Herrera you rebuild the engine of that team in center midfield.

Instead they tried to get cute and save money on the two signings they needed dearly.

Agreed.

It would have taken a ton, but they obviously have the cake. Kroos has won it all (barring the Euro), all he needs now is truckloads of cash and the crazy part is that hes WORTH it!

Kroos is the weirdest part of this entire summer. He ran Bayern and Germany's midfield for the most part and then is discarded like a fringe player. Unreal.

Did not know there would be such a strong following of football on here. Nice to know - I'll probably be posting more in here than I will in the Flames forum!!

oh, PS. Lallana was £23m, rising to £25m with add-ons ;-)

Yeah, he's probably the best CM in the world at the minute. But he was in the last year of his contract and he wasn't going to re-sign, so they could either risk losing on a pre-contract for nothing in January, or sell him to wherever he wanted to go; he held all the cards, which is a rare thing in football!

I'm sure United had an offer in for him as well but.. well, who on earth would wanna go there?!

;-)

United did have an offer, Moyes went and saw him play last season before he was sacked, United were the front runners until Real came in out of nowhere.

The fact of the matter for Bayern wasnt about getting something for him as opposed to losing him on a free, he wanted tons of cash in wages and it would have skewed Bayern's wage structure and they didnt think it would be worth it.

I think it would have been worth it, and thats probably the more popular opinion.

Really? I dont see that.

Mignolet really hasnt put a foot wrong for Liverpool. I cant remember the last time I thought he was to blame for a goal.

Valdes is definitely more fluent in playing the ball from the back though.

And Valdes is still out until November as I recall with a knee injury.

I dont see Mignolet as more than an above average shot stopper

Valdes distribution is great and while he's not up there with Neuer or Lloris he can move around the box a bit and cut off through balls

ok taking a stab at United's 11.
Of first team, RVP & Carrick are out
I think the only formation that gets the best players on the field, is a diamond.

---------- Falcao - Rooney ---------
--------------- Mata ---------------
------- di Maria ----- Herrera --------
-------------- Blind -----------------
-- Shaw --------------------- Rafael
----------- Rojo - Jones -----------

I see this all the time.

Van Gaal plays with wingbacks. So try again with 3 at the back, then wingbacks.

van Gaal prefers 4 at the back, but opts for 3 if he thinks the midfield is too weak for that. He only changed to 3-5-2 at the Netherlands when Strootman got injured ... before it was a normal 4-3-3 all the time. I have no idea if he wants to continue with 3 at the back, now that they have brought in Blind, di Maria and Herrera.

If he still wants 3 at the back and wing backs, how about something like this:

Blind played wing back for van Gaal at the WC and is no stranger to the right side either (he almost exclusively played RB for Groningen before moving to Ajax), so I guess that could work. But on paper, I prefer the system that cam_wmh posted ... or even a 4-3-3:

this would always leave one or two of Falcao/van Persie/Rooney/Mata on the bench, that's why it's unlikely ... but at least it would create competition within the squad, di Maria could play where's best and Januzaj would see a lot of minutes too.

All the time? You surely did not at United, Fergie only toyed with it a few times.

As Devo mentioned, LVG playing the 3-5-2 was more conducive to his Dutch W.C squad, than his playing strategy. He is NOT exclusively 3 CB's/full ranged wingbacks. Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see United is weak at CB.

While the 11 I wrote out is left-side heavy, move di Maria to the right side, and let him centralize his shot; similar to how Ancelotti has fielded Bale/Ronaldo.

Anyway, more on the Kroos topic. Scholes shared some contentious insight into United. The need for 5 more first team players. Apparently he was quite privy to the Kroos scenario, and United were persuing him, and then --- it just died. Apparently LVG doesn't rate him.

Oops, forgot to cite Scholes & the need for 5 more first teamers.

I meant 'all the time' as in people proposing lineups using a formation that the manager doesn't play :-P

Anyway, if I'm honest, the best United lineup is one that doesn't contain Rooney. It really is.

Did you read the responses or have you concluded that because he played a back three at the WC and so far this season that is the only formation he plays?

And why is that?

Arsenal and Spurs do a lot of good work on trying to make football more inclusive. This is some quality work.
