Other than that, it's the same old Calgary Flames from 2013-14. There was a lot of talk that if they did things right this off season, they could contend for a playoff spot. These changes won't be enough, which is disappointing given the talk after the hire. Admittedly there is time before opening day which could see changes.

Not trying to derail the thread, but adding marginal depth on d, while interesting given the lack of news, is kind of like a flat ending to a movie.
The Flames? The Calgary Flames? I dont think thats a thing that happened.

maybe by "doing things right" he meant pick up Crosby, Stamkos, Chara, Webber and a bunch of other all stars.

How on earth can you expect with any sort of sanity that a guy drafted 2 years ago, who has 2 pro games under his belt, and missed the entire year because of a staph infection - which impacted his ability to do anything physically let alone hockey - to be a #6 dman on this team?

I'm all for tryouts, regardless of position. It can't hurt to have healthy competition.

No, I was thinking more Wotherspoon and maybe at some point in the season Sieloff will be fit enough to get a shot.

Even still we'd probably need someone to 'Tonya Harding' the opposing goaltenders on a nightly basis.

This team is lucky if it isnt getting a lottery pick, 'contending for the playoffs' is laughable.

I will never forget the guy who called in to overtime and went on a massive rant about how Anders Eriksson was the franchise player that we needed to build the team around. One of the funniest OT call ins. Still am not entirely sure if serious or not (was probably a' trollin) but he gave a very convincing performance. Kerr just shut him down about a minute in after he couldn't get a word in to tell the guy he was an idiot, then had this pause afterwards where you almost knew he was taking a moment to literally face palm in his seat.

Wasnt there a rumour about Zalapski wanting to make a comeback in Calgary?

There was!

I have a friend who is a member at Country Hills Golf Course, who ended up playing a round with Zarley Zalapski yesterday. Zarley is touring all the private golf courses in the city to decide where he wants to buy a membership for the summer.

My friend asked Zarley about how he's enjoying retirement, and was shocked to hear that Zarley is not done yet, and had spoken to Feaster about signing with the Flames this year! Apparently, Feaster offered Zarley a pro scout or office job, but Zarley insisted scouting is not for him. He said he may take an office job, but he feels he can still play in the NHL.

FWIW, he was outdriving my friend by 60 yards on the course (friend hits 240-270 yards), and was built like a tank. He also shared some info on his old friend, Nieuwendyk. Apparently Bob Gainey I has been in talks with Dallas because Joe is completely overburdened in the GM role. I had never heard that before, so it was interesting to say the least.

Zarley will be playing Canyon Meadows today, for all you stalkers. I have a pic my friend took with him yesterday at Country, but I have no idea how to post it...

Would you be open to having Zarley patrol our blue line this coming season?

Granted, that was a couple of years ago.

I thought that was hilarious at the time. Zalapski played like he was 45 years old in 1997, I could only imagine what he would look like now. What happened to that guy? I remember being disappointed when we traded Suter but pretty happy when we got a young, up and comer who looked like he could be a part of the team for years. He looked good in the first lockout year but then 1996 happened and suddenly he forgot how to play hockey. So bizarre.

That was the old regime. The new regime re-signed him so they probably see some upside in him.

But for the D possibilities, we discussed this back in July under this thread:

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=138731

Sheldon brookbank
Corey Potter
Carlo Colaiacovo
Matt Gilroy
Mark Fraser
justin Falk
Ryan Whitney
Nolan Yonkman
Aaron Rome
Matt Taormina

Only Falk has signed since the last thread, all others remain on the market

With Treliving looking for those that play a 'heavy' game, Brookbank, Fraser, Yonkman and maybe Rome stand out. There was talk that Brookbank might re-up with the Blackhawks if they can make room, Yonkman has history with Treliving back in Phoenix, Fraser has history with Burke from Toronto and Rome was in Ducks organization when Burke was there.
Gilroy is signed in the KHL and their season starts on September 3rd, so i doubt that he can be released at that point just for a tryout.

I'm happy with where the team is headed, time and time again it's been proven making big moves screws up teams, especially Calgary. We don't need massive change every year. We need prospects that can play. Forget big trades and huge free agency signings that change the dynamics of a team, how often does that lead to Stanley Cups? LA and Chicago sucked for years and developed their prospects and are now annual contenders.
I thought LA made two big trades moving quite a few of their prospects to become the flyers west was how it went. Not the best example.

I just had a popup on my phone state that Sheldon Brookbank will get a PTO at the Flames training camp.

Anyone see this? Why him? Maybe Burke just wants everyone to be scared of the Flames for at least one season.
