Neat our company was the first to start the ball rolling in Iceland on nominating other companies instead of individuals, so for in 4 days, 16 companies have taken part and we are nearing around $20,000 CAD in donations to the local ALS charity.

Why is it that all these celebrities are silent on the fact that they get a ####load of oil from a country that:
A: cuts people's heads off in a public square
B: refuses to allow its women to even drive a car
C: funnels a ridiculous amount of money into terrorist organizations.
But the "tar sands!!!" are the devil. Is it because we're nice Canadians and will just sit there being all polite about this?

Wow Leo is a hack. He even called them tar sands. Shouldn't he have researched something he is making a movie on?
Off-topic: Who cares? So what if he called them tar sands? Those raging enviro-hippies at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers even have an FAQ page on this very subject, where they claim that many old-time oilmen still say "tar sands" because that's the term people in the industry used for decades.
Until the 1960s, everyone called them the tar sands. At that point, primarily as a way of communicating more clearly what product would eventually come out of the bitumen, the Alberta government started calling them the oil sands.
Both terms were used interchangeably until about ten years ago when this topic became politicized by the opponents of the way the bituminous sands were being developed. Tar sands sounds more sinister to the ear now. The proponents of the development seem to make it a point to always call them the oil sands.
Politicization came with the relatively recent fights over all the complicated social, political, environmental and emotional issues that now surround this topic.
But talk to any of the old timers and they will use the two terms interchangeably. For the old dudes there is no emotion associated with either term.

No one calls them tar sands anymore. If he is making a documentary film that will sway millions of people's opinions about our province he should at least have a basic idea what he is talking about
Tar doesn't come out of the ground
Edit: i find it kind of funny that you clearly went out of your way to make it seem like that is a quote from CAPP when the link clearly says tar sands is an innaccurate term and the quote you posted is just a guy writing into their website

It sucks that these celebrities don't put their money and influence into developing, and promoting alternative energy sources, instead of shaming the currently necessary petroleum producers.
Are the oil sands ideal? no, but they're a necessary evil until alternative energy sources are viable on larger scales.

I find it remarkable that all it took to enrage some folks here is for Di Caprio to use the term "tar sands". Plenty of people call them the tar sands still, especially people who aren't in favour of it. Either way he didn't say anything negative in the video. Grow up.
edit: Akermans is the best one yet.

hardly saw anyone "enraged".
I think there's a time and place for things and during a publicity stunt designed to raise money for a cause you probably shouldn't push your political and environmental causes.
I can't imagine Harper (who was challenged) doing it and throwing in a bit about climate change or oil sands. Who knows though...
What bit did he throw in exactly? Leo? Besides using such an evil term.
