The discussion is about opportunities for prospects, so I would think including Monahan and Baertschi makes sense.
Making the team out of camp certainly qualifies as an opportunity in my books
|
As I said I added Baertschi it was my mistake(you can see the edit). Monahan seems very much like the exception and not the rule when it comes to Flames prospects, so I am not sure if he should be a part of this list. I just tried to add a different way of looking at things when we process the information.
I said in the beginning of this thread that I don't know how to develop prospects, so I can't have any complaints regarding who makes the NHL and when. For me simply looking at man games lost seemed like a bad way to go when evaluating the opportunity given our prospects. If you wish to change the numbers go ahead. I am certainly not trying to deceive anyone or make the numbers fit a point.

Hope for the best, but expect a big jar of "meh" from this signing.
A classic case for lowered expectations.

At 750k, he's just a foot soldier with a slight offensive touch and low expectations.

Fact: There was a void on RW that needed to be addressed. It was. As usual, just another mediocre stop gap by Flames management that unfortunately I have gotten used to. Nobody on the farm is ready to make the jump yet and actually that void needs to be addressed in short order too. Personally, I am still hopeful that Knight can crack the lineup on RW this year. What really hurts is this is Treviling's best move yet (except for trying to pick up draft picks via salary dump, and that didn't work out so it really doesn't count). Burke's ego with the Cammy situation cost us a decent draft pick. Like I said at the trade deadline, bad Karma and sure enough Burke didn't disappoint me, cause the Flames got absolutely nothing for him. I am really starting to get worried. I said it before and Ill say it again, Stajan and Jones gotta go. Before you bring on the hate, don't, cause I don't care what you think of my opinions. I was at the very first Calgary Flames game ever and I have seen and been through it all. I've come to the conclusion that some of you, esp those looking for gramatical and speling errors, just need to get laid.

Please don't bring up Cammy in a thread about Setoguchi.

Obviously you do or you wouldn't be sharing it. The entire point of a message board is to read others opinions.
But you already knew that. Possibly.

Getting a second for Reto Berra and a third for Stempniak was all I needed to see at the deadline.

And that 2nd turned into "Big Rig" Hunter Smith whom I have very high hopes for.

If Knight or Rienhart or Grandlund force their way on the team does Stajan get the pine as well.
He is a poor excuse for a 3rd line checking centre.

This post is absolute crap. Matt Stajan is an excellent 3rd line centre who is great in the dressing room as well as the community.

This moves just says to me the Flames are going for McDavid but trying to not make it so obvious by dressing a rookie lineup.

The issue is; who replaces Stajan and Jones? Stajan is an emergency first line centre that can fill the gap without being a huge defensive liability. I agree they are weak points but we can't just shove Monahan into first line duties, he needs to grow a little or the work load will wear him down. Let Backlund do it? He's a very similar player to Stajan in that neither is a gamebreaker, so who is first line centre until Monahan is a few years older? Atleast we have stopgaps, a stopgap is a good thing in a sense, it stops our future assets from deteriorating before they reach full potential. Let Setogouchi be a foot soldier, he can be in the spot until Poirier steals it from him. I too wish Stajan was gone but getting rid of him without an equal replacement only serves to make the team worse years down the road.
It doesn't really seem like management wants last place, it seems like picking up a free asset that only has upside. It's very similar to Roman Cervenka, he came in and never met expectations but there was no real downside. Even if Setogouchi performs like a league minimum player so what maybe he won't, that's the upside.

I'd rather we have options than having to run with rookies. You'd think after all the ridicule Edmonton gets on this board some posters would be a bit more reflective on supporting what has essentially been their strategy over the past 3-4 years.

I think the best case scenario right now is to add Dustin Penner as well.

The difference is, as I've said before, Edmonton has been relying on their young forwards for 1st line duty. We wouldn't be doing that.
