Default Saskatoon Berry or Juneberry?

Most people on this forum have a personal vendetta against Saskatchewan based on our superior football team. How do they feel about changing the name of the Berry that founded our city?

Quote:
“One berry, two berry, pick me a…Saskatoon berry?!” The name of this little-known purple fruit doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. No marketer’s dream here. And now some Canadians who have long cultivated the tiny super-food are crying foul over a quiet U.S.-led push to re-brand it: from saskatoon to juneberry. And there’s no truce in sight.

All the american books I have ever read that deal with Saskatoons call them Serviceberries. I think this is one of those things where in fact Saskatoon did the re-branding, and is a little pissed cause it didn't work.

My bigger beef in that article was the comparison of Dragon's Den being the Canadian equivalent to The Apprentice, when it's the equivalent to Shark Tank.

We don't call cuts of beef the same, along with a slew of other foods so I don't see the big deal.

Besides, the less we associate Saskatchewan with Canada, the better.

And yet I had a friend who came down from England and she called them Saskatoon berries, so the word did spread pretty far (I have only ever heard them called Saskatoon berries myself).

Often natives - but not all natives - as well as the Voyageurs called them Saskatoons. Lewis and Clark, however, were the first westerners speaking English that first described the berries to science. They called them Serviceberries.

Has anyone else ever noticed how people from Saskatchewan manage to insert the Riders into pretty much everything?

Going to a NHL game? Wear a Riders jersey.
How about that weather? Great day for a Riders game.
US re-names produce? Riders.

When I woke up this morning, I rolled my eyes at the stupidity of Americans re-branding a berry. Now that the issue has been linked to the Rider Nation, I have reconsidered and now think it is important for Canadians to keep our best friend, largest trading partner and neighbour happy... Saskatoons are dead, long live the Juneberry!

And to reduce confusion, and the potential economic impact arising from that confusion, I think it is prudent that the name change be mandatory in all instances. Juneberry, the Paris of the Prairies!

Why stop there with that kind of pretentiousness?

Why not call them Roughrider berries?

And more importantly Dragon's Den was first. And Shark Tank is the knock off version.

And they should be called Saskatoon berries because that's what they have been called for a long time although I would accept service berries from Lewis and Clark.

The province has two things going for it. A historically bad football team and a berry. Dont take it away.

If they only grew in Saskatoon, then it would make sense.

Do they only grow in June? Either way it doesn't matter. I like Juneberry better.

Unfortunate that you worded it like this as it will immediately put Stamps fans on the defensive. I do know what you mean about the personal vendetta against the province just because of some stupid Riders fans. It gets tiring.

I think the name change is stupid.
