Upon reflection, seems like a move to pick up a draft pick at the deadline and provide depth upon event of injury, that's fine. I actually think Gaudreau will play his way onto the roster anyway, so no big deal. Bennett is going to get sent down.
But next season, the one following this one, if Calgary ends up picking up a McDavid or Eichel who may be NHL ready right out of the draft, then with Bennett probably ready to go after a year back in the minors (at least for the A), I'm not sure I want to see a bunch of Setoguchi signings.
And for the love of god stop referring to him as "gooch".[/QUOTE]
thank you....if setoguchi is such great pick up...why did 29 other teams pass him up..

Not exactly an official stat for that, but there is 'man-games lost', which you could restrict to 'starter man - games lost' them divide by 82. I've seen that man games # floating around but forget what it was for the last year.

That's fine, but then don't tell us a prospect can make the team by outplaying a veteran. As a prospect, I'd see myself performing better than Jones and wonder why I'm not on the team out of training camp. I'm not sure I'd be thrilled to hear, "Yeah, you played better than Jones, Setoguchi, Colbourne and others, but you really need to be better than Glencross and Hudler to make the team."

Late to the game, but i think a guy who's game stagnated in thr AHL is Alexandre Giroux.

Disagree. Never had the footspeed to play in the NHL, wasn't physical or cared about defense.
Like Krog, Keith Aucoin or even Jaffray this was a player you could see was a very strong AHL player but his game simply didn't translate to the NHL.

Also, on a team that's as hurting for good nicknames as the Flames, I think "The Gooch" is a welcome addition to the roster.
When "Backs" is an above-average nickname on the team, and Scoreface may be in his last season with the club, Gooch is a sorely needed addition. Big Ern is of course a solid contribution, but doesn't play enough minutes to be a difference maker in that regard.
Sure, we have Johnny Hockey in the pipeline, along with The Spoon or TSpoon (we don't really know his NHL ceiling yet). But you can't just GIVE your prospects a nickname, that's how you end up like the Oilers, with Jultz, the Nuge, and Yakcity. And now Draisaitl is all but guaranteed a nickname out of training camp.
Adding veteran NHLer who already have solid nicknames of their own is something the Oilers consistently failed to do, and I'm glad to see the Flames a avoiding that pitfall.

According to that lineup, our RW depth looks disgusting.

Secondly, Setoguchi playing well doesn't benefit the Flames that much since he's capped out as a 3rd liner. A guy like Poirer, however, has the potential to be a first liner who plays similar to Brad Marchand. The Flames have a bunch of 2nd/3rd liners in Stajan, Jones, Huds, Glenny, etc. and need to create first liners. Don't kid yourself, Setoguchi isn't going to make the Flames better long term, so why not invest in someone who will?
|
1) They have to ice a team this year and every year. Setoguchi is an NHLer right now, Poirier isn't.
2) Setoguchi is signed for a whopping ONE year
3) (here's the important part) The Flames ARE investing in Poirier - heavily. That is why they operate a farm team and have development coaches, trainers, etc. To develop players.
I am a huge fan of Poirier and think he can be a dynamite NHLer, but to suggest he is ready to play in the NHL now, and that that is the best place for him, are very different things.

Gotta agree, with some corrections/additions…
- Brian McGrattan – although his twitter handle is BigErn, around the rink it’s not uncommon to hear the guys call him “Grats”
- Hudler – "Huds"
- Bouma – "Booms"
- Wideman – "Wides"
Our Nickname Grit Index (NGI) is hovering around 23%. Adding “Gooch” bumps it up to around 41% just based on it’s connection to the bully on Diff’rent Strokes.
Ps. Love that the Oilers and Oiler fans call Yakupov “YakCity.” That’s what I used to do after a big night of drinking in University.

Thus far:
Offense
Cammalleri >> Raymond
Stempniak >> Setoguchi
Westgarth < Bollig
Defense
Butler > Engelland
Goaltending
Berra <<< Hiller
Offense and defense get worse, but our goaltending gets a lot better. Only difference is I guarantee we will lose a lot more of those one goal games.

I really disagree with your assessment here. Stempy was pretty awful offensively save for one of his streaks. At least Setoguchi can provide more consistent scoring. Engelland may not be the best defender in the league by any stretch, but just about anyone is better than Chris Butler.

Poirer will be ready. Hes looked very good since and before being drafted. Even at camp last year he looked great. He's got enough size, speed and gifts to play at the NHL, but its his structure that will unknown.
Gaudreau will ready too. I'm willing to bet most fans watching camp will believe Gaudreau and Poirer will stand out more than Jones, Setoguchi and potentially Raymond. But they won't be given a job in the NHL because they CAN be sent down.

Setoguchi took a step back wheras Stempniak stayed the same. Setoguchi couldn't fetch a 3rd rounder, all Jets' fans wanted him out.
Hate Butler all you want, but he was a better defenseman than Engelland last year.

Porier had shoulder surgery in the off season and isn't even expected back until the fall. That's not evening mentioning the time it will take him to get back in the groove before even thinking about a call up / being NHL ready after such a serious injury.
You should really have some semblance of an idea as to what you're talking about before you complain up a storm.

Did you forget Granlund and Reinhart being called up? SOB going down? Who will replace those three players if they were sent down? Rookies on 2 way contracts who aren't physically or mentally prepared for the NHL?
