Weird eh? This one year contract totally derails the rebuild.

It's basically trading Galiardi for Setoguchi.

Here is my bipolar take on this signing.
He has averaged at least 20 goals per season since he has gone pro with the exception of last season (prorated over 82 games of course). At 27, I don't think it's too far out to think that last season could be an outlier when his career is all said and done. The "buy low, sell high" potential is really good here IMO. At any rate, it is a low risk signing.
Again, I don't want to slam the signing because I generally like it, but I do wonder about how it affects camp competition. For example, how good does a rookie need to be in order to win a spot over someone like Setoguchi. Do they need to show that they can out produce him? Because IMO, that shouldn't be the primary factor for a rebuilding team to consider. It should be whether or not the prospect can learn more and advance his skills better in the NHL than the AHL or junior. That could very well mean lower production in the mean time though. Setoguchi being a veteran, will likely be better than most of the prospects we have if you consider short term production.

it delays it....would rather see kids who deserve a shot at making the big leagues then burnouts...
I understand the signing in that it does add a little depth to the organization...but if a player who was passed by 29 other teams and who signed for peanuts is upgrade, then perhaps we all have over-rated our prospects, which is a scary thought for the future of this organization.
or maybe this team is really trying to tank for McDavid

What at one time was an open competition between rookies to fill a spot has now become, we don't need a rookie. That doesn't necessarily mean that a rookie forward won't make the team, although I'd guess the rookie will need to take a starting spot and that means he'll have to beat out one of Jones, Bouma, Colborne or Setigochi. Of course injuries could happen in camp and he could get playing time if we don't need McGrattan on a regular basis as well.

While I like the signing... I wonder what happens to the kids trying to make the team. What if both baertschi and gaudreau are over a point per game in the preseason and both look NHL ready? There just isn't enough room unless someone is injured or a trade happens. I know setoguchi is a right winger but his signing likely means Raymond will play the left side instead of his off-wing. That means only one rookie can likely make the team. That might be what management has in mind and it's good I guess. No problem with either player getting more development in the AHL.

I don't think Byron is necessarily a shoe in at this point either.
Personally, I hope we can somehow jettison Jones.

That may be true for a few people, but I think most of the people who are complaining about these moves are the same ones who wondered what the hell Feaster was thinking when there were rumors that he was going to sign Raymond last off-season. It would have been a bad move then, and it was even worse this summer now that we have more guys knocking on the door. If anything, people are going easy on Treliving because he's still fairly popular overall.
Speaking for myself, I still like the idea of Treliving even though I can't honestly say I've liked a single move he's made (other than the no-brainer Bennett pick and the Wolf signing that was a done deal before Treliving took over). I'm still giving him time before I turn on him, but I don't like the idea of taking up roster spots with guys like Engellend, Bollig, Raymond and Setoguchi, who won't have to compete for their jobs.

Bunch of unnecessary hand-wringing going on in here in the dog days of August.
Good signing at a good price, should make competition better on all lines. Hell, he may be on the 1st or second line if he hits a hot streak.
At worst, he's a 27 year old with more or less consistent NHL numbers. That consistency is big; it shows guys that like Sven and Monahan and others that it takes more then one year (or stretch of games) to be a long term NHL player, and even then, nothing is guaranteed....that should push those younger guys to be better/consistent day in and day out.
And if those guys can't keep up to a guy like Setigochi and unseat his spot on the roster (in camp, or through the year), then they have more to work on in the AHL or up here day in and day out.

I didn't mention Byron because I look at him as a 13th or 14th forward who should make the team and compete for a starting spot but isn't pencilled in one.

I disagree with this, although it seems to be the mantra by the new management (so long to 'truculence' and 'intellectual honesty' I suppose). I think if a player spends too much time in the AHL, there comes a point that you risk developing them into an AHL player. Finding the sweet spot for when to introduce a player into the NHL is the real trick, and it comes later for some... but you don't want to miss it.

We get it already. You're not a fan of the signing.
If you really think this signing makes the Flames any worse than they already were, you're fooling yourself.

LW - Hudler, Raymond, Glencross, Bollig
C - Stajan, Backlund, Colborne, Monahan, Byron, Bouma
RW - Jones, McGrattan, Setoguchi
That's 14 forwards by my count. With 7 defensemen and 2 goalies that's your roster.
To me that means there's room only if a vet is sent down, traded or injured, all of which are possible. There will absolutely be spots open for taking, does it matter if it's opening night or game 20?
Only real players hurt by this are the junior kids as they would pretty much have to make opening night to get a chance

on the off chance this team gets McDavid next year....this team is going to find it hard to get to the cap floor with so many very good prospects that deserve a chance in the NHL..at this point next year they are going to need to sign has been vets at inflated prices....see florida a few years ago

That's fine.
Chicago needed to sign Brian Campbell to a huge contract back when they were starting to come out of their rebuild to hit the floor. We will likely need to throw some major coin at a similar calibre of UFA next year.
Spezza, Krejic, Martin, Marc Staal, Jackman, and Sekera are all UFA at the end of the year and could be signed to mid/long term contracts at good coin (there are other good players but they are 1/2 year deal guys)

Uh, I think you miscounted. I count 13 forwards so there is room for a rookie. I think he needs to win a starting job though.
