If our prospects can't outplay borderline vets who can only garner small 1-year contracts in FA, they probably shouldn't be in the NHL quite yet. Add in the anticipated injuries throughout the year, and NHL playing time for the kids shouldn't be much concern. I think we've gotten used to kids getting excessive, unearned playing time during the Feaster reign.

So, as far as gauging the temperature of the board, you're not the best one to judge.

That's a very good way to put it. And in that case, we won the trade!

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
If you're keen to go out and get a #Flames Setoguchi jersey, he will wear No. 15. That number was last seen on the back of Kevin Westgarth.

Also, you have some deep rooted issues that probably require professional help.
Or you're Devin's mom.

Or you're a true fan of the team and will support any player that wears the flaming C.

I was poking fun at the tweet, not the person who posted it? Like, "If you're keen to go out and get a #Flames Setoguchi jersey, you have some deep rooted..."

If you think of this signing as keeping a spot from Gaudreau, yeah from that perspective it's disappointing, but really this is the new Galiardi, aka new default 13th forward. And he shoots right.

I can't see anything stopping JG from playing himself on this team barring an injury.

Your 100 posts in 10 minutes didn't count as the majority, sorry. I will argue that in Sven's case, even if he did beat out a guy or two at the time, he was still not NHL ready, so in his best interest and the best interest of the organizations, he should (and was) sent down. You aren't going to ruin a prospect by doing so, but you sure can ruin a prospect by making him feel entitled and force him in a league where he is not physically or mentally ready for.
As for Setoguchi, I personally don't think this is a good fit for the Flames. I mean, Flames need a RW that is also a RHS, but I think that is where the fit ends. Hartley likes to play a very up-tempo style of game where the forwards are free to attack, and there is an emphasis on forechecking, but the same forwards are also forced to skate back hard to help break up plays. Devin better be in the best shape of his life, because he is going to need it. I don't see him keeping up for the whole season, and I have seen him slowly decline. It wasn't 'one bad season', it was only one good season. He is a guy that normally hovers around .5ppg. Last year was a bit lower, but people better not expect the guy that was playing with Thornton and has all this 'upside'.
With that being said, it isn't a horrible move. It doesn't negatively impact the team. If a rookie can not beat a Setoguchi or a Jones, then said rookie is probably best to start in the AHL. Hopefully Setoguchi goes back to around .5ppg, but if not and some rookie beats him, you can hide his full salary in the minors (not that the Flames need to do so).
If anything this does, is reassure me that rookies aren't going to be rushed just to appease fans. This is not the Edmonton Oilers. I just don't understand how people can 'hate' signing RW depth at arguably the weakest position organizationally.

I thought Smid was wearing #15? Will he go back to 3?
