If one person earns more than the other, it's to make sure the quality of life for the child is approximately the same at both houses. The child support is usually only based on the discrepancy in salaries in that case.

Kind of, in my case my wife and I both earned about the same, on paper my daughter was with me about 1/3 on the time, in reality it was probably more than half, I probably could of argued I shouldn't pay but it wasn't worth the grief, my ex wasn't a bad mum, it was in my interest to help limit the financial effects of the divorce on my kid.

I ended up paying about a grand a month for ten years, never once missed a payment, not so much as late a day. Pointed this out to my daughter when she was telling me how unreliable I was according to her mum, could've heard a pin drop, priceless!!

In this case it was really just recording what my wife and I agreed to and doing the necessary paperwork. But I can totally see how this would be an inappropriate arrangement under most circumstances
