Much of Genie's problem probably stems from the fact that she took a month off after Wimbledon.

As far as Townsend-Serena being a "fix" by ESPN, I don't think they really wanted the guarantee that they lose one of their big hype-hopes in the first round.

Rosol sucks and Wavrinka is running out of steam, it think it was the best of the top 4 guys he could draw. Nishikori is tricky as always but I hope he gets into a bunch of long matches in the first week.

I don't know if I'd call Townsend a "big hype" player yet (nice win over Cornet at the French but otherwise nothing really), but getting Serena on opening night on ESPN live will certainly help raise her profile big time.

I'm not sure how Wawrinka can be dismissed when Milos is 0-3 against him. Wawrinka can bomb serves and punish Milos with groundstrokes. I'd be surprised if Milos beats him. But then again Wawrinka is up and down so he might not even get there.

Especially if she is injured. Hamstrings are tough to get back to 100% without some rest.

Not dismissing him but when the top 4 seeds are Djokovic, Federer, Wawrinka and Ferrer.. you want Wawrinka.

Djokovic and Federer are.. well Djokovic and Federer. And Ferrer is the energizer bunny, he'll run forever. Wawrinka is the question mark, still riding the high ranking from his Aussie Open win.

I think I'd rather have Ferrer of the 4; I agree Wawrinka is better than Fed or Djokovic but only because they are even worse matchups for Milos. Stan when he on is a bad matchup for Milos. But maybe Vasek takes him out first, could definitely happen. Pospisil has a pretty decent section with only Robredo and Youzhny in it before Wawrinka.

She's American, that's all ESPN needs. As a bonus, former junior #1.

Oh brother...

Maria Sharapova, the tennis star who wields the highest brand power in the industry, is planning to pull another publicity stunt ahead of the US Open. The former number one has made an appeal to Florida’s Supreme Court to change her name to Maria SUGARPOVA during the course of the competition, on condition that she can revert back to her real name once the tennis event is over.

Sugarpova is the brand name of the tennis star’s range of brightly colored sweets with catchy names such as Sporty and Smitten Sour. The brand was started by the 26 year old with an initial layout of $300,000 and features a pair of hot lips as its logo. Sharapova will be wearing a brightly colored outfit when she plays at Flushing Meadow from August 26th, with her attire bearing the hot lips logo.

Extended piece on Genie in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine. Insight into her training, her relationship with Nick Saviano, family life, life post-Wimbledon, the disaster in Montreal and her falling out with Laura Robson. Pretty long but very good read.

Polansky and Daniel have split the first two sets. One final set for all the marbles.

Edit: Polansky breaks early, up 2-0

Edit2: Polansky choked, lost 6-3.

Edit 3: It's the GirlySports curse.

Milos draws Taro Daniel in round 1.

Should have been Polansky

Has anyone found a good tv schedule for the Canadians at the US Open? I'm all confused now with the new TSN channels debuting.
