Wind turbines kill between 600,000 to 900,000 bats per year.
http://www.popsci.com/blog-network/e...t-should-we-do

One colony of 500 bats can consume up to 250,000 mosquitos per hour.

pro-wind power activist = pro-mosquito activist.

just so I'm up to speed... Oil spill kills 1200 birds = very bad, fine them millions. Solar plant kills 28000 birds per year = meh, sh*t happens.

ignoring the process of what burning coal/oil does for long term damage to the planet, why are we not demanding the same treatment of big industry killing birds.

Because when oil spills, it doesn't just kill birds.

Turbines and oil sands have ver little impact compared to cats and tall buildings

All forms of power generation and distribution kill huge amounts of birds. Power linesmen are always picking up fried birds. Two died in my yard last year.

So why is it that only oil sands are targeted (or fined) as offenders in killing birds?

Just another double standard in that costs of supposedly 'clean' energy are ignored or underestimated.

Oil spills do more damage then just to birds. It kills foliage, contaminates water supply, marine life and the soil.

Solar plants seem to just effect the birds.

If the beams are hot enough to fry birds out of mid air, it must really warming things up in the atmosphere. Someone tell Al Gore!

Plus, birds are inherently evil.

I cannot answer your question or even verify its basis. I will say that many people like to point to bird kills in alternative as a reason not to develop the technology. All industries need to work to improve wildlife protection.

I've done a lot of work in mine site remediation and I think its ridiculous that governments continue to allow industry to develop huge tailings ponds. Technology exists to treat them as you make them and not deal with them in some distant future (i.e. government pick up the bill after the company goes bankrupt).

How do you figure?

Either that sunlight falls on the 3500 acres directly and heats the ground, or it bounces of the mirrors and hits the tower and heats that a lot. The total amount of sunlight (the amount of energy) doesn't change.

I guess strictly speaking the albedo of the land will differ from the albedo of the tower plus any other generation losses, so yeah it might change the albedo of the planet by some tiny amount. But the albedo of dirt is already like .3 so 70% of incoming sunlight is converted to heat.

EDIT: Unless it was just for the lulz, in that case

Do they recapture power from the incinerations and sell it into the grid?

Ah yes, the ducks debate. I think everyone is severely underestimating. It wasn't 1,200 ducks that died on the tailings ponds, it was 1,600 and then another 550 later for a total of 2,150 birds. Get your facts straight people! Link to Huff article: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/10...n_1940030.html

Nobody click on this link either. I mean, it's not like close to 200,000 birds are HUNTED............that's right, literally shot out of the air, every year, in California.

I mean don't get me wrong... energy sources are always inherently evil. But if there should be an article worth posting about if you love birds and ducks or whatever, maybe you should look at 1 of the 50 states and 10 provinces where birds are literally shot out of the fataing air, to drop to their doom.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/waterfowl/shoot/

Don't forget, that's 200,000 birds- in one state. One. State. 200,000.
