This is my own favorite genre, and there are almost too many to choose from.
Lots of honorable mentions that could have easily slipped in here, but since we're playing top 5 only, here we go:
Scarface
Goodfellas
American Gangster
Casino
The Departed
Outside of the obvious ones like The Godfathers, Scarface, Goodfellas and Casino I really like The Departed
Do The Heat and The Town count? We could even have a heist movie thread, id have those 2 with Bank Job and Inside Man probably
There are some pretty amazing heist movies out there ... especially if you include non-traditional ones or "caper" movies. Like The Great Escape, or Inception.
Sometimes I wonder where I went wrong, but I never enjoyed the Godfather. At all.
I used to consider myself a massive move buff. I have never watched any of the Godfather movies. I have them downloaded and ready to go, just never hit play on it. I really should I suppose.

To me it is a great rainy day movie - you need a solid block of time with no distractions and to immerse in the movie. The pacing is slow, so that can throw people off.
I have read the book too and that is a fun read - a lot more violence and sex in the box - bordering on pulp
Yes Scarface is one that I don't think I can ever get on board with, and the same can be said for The Untouchables, Sean Connery playing an irish cop and Kevin Costner is not a good actor.
Godfather 1
Godfather 2
Goodfellas
The Departed
Road to Perdition
Gangs of New York
