Wow a relevent topic between all the console wars. That's why I keep checking back here.
I'm strongly considering going all digital too. Typically I only buy NHL and FIFA at full retail price, and I may not even buy both every year. I'm patient enough with most other games to wait for sales. And of the 3 games I've bought so far, I've seen them all go on sale in the online marketplace at some point. Digital deals seem to be coming more regularly.
I'm also finding the time and effort to sell or trade games im done with is hardly worthwhile. Its was pretty humerous that last time I went into EB games they were offering me $2-3 per game I was gonna trade in. I'd rather just keep the game on my hard drive or account.
And switching from NHL to FIFA (or anything else) without having to grab a disc each time is really convenient.

Yeah the trade in market has dried up in the last year.
It was pretty good for a while there when Future Shop was running the trade 2 get a $60 gift card promo pretty much constantly.
Sadly the abuse (Redflagdeals) led to them having to dial back on those promos, and take out a lot of the value for the games that were eligible.

Discs only really make sense for new releases now because if you finish the game within a month of the release you can get between $20-34 depending if EB has any promos. I got $30 recently for Infamous Second Son which is pretty decent. Anything that's not a AAA new release has a pretty crappy trade in value.

Given the choice for games really in my wheelhouse or anything RPG, I'm still erring on the side of physical copies rather than digital (even for PC). I almost never trade anything in anymore but I'll do digital if something is cheap and I might play it one day on a whim. Maybe. Some day. When I retire.
And I realize that it's long gone, but I still miss the days of the cloth map, full manual and the huge ass box art and goodies inside.

Which is fine by me. If the game has replay value then I'd probably hang onto it but games like Tomb Raider, Assassins Creed, Dishonoured, Wolfenstein, etc. Don't have much replay value, IMO. Once I finish the story modes in those games there is very little chance I'd ever play it again.

People need to stop trading their crap into EB and sell it to other people to get top value. On that note someone sell me a cheap copy of The Last of Us for PS3.

As Rhett said, it depends entirely on the replay ability of the game whether you find value in it. At $20 for what is essentially a rental of a game, that value is far greater than $50 for a game you play the exact same amount, but allow to sit on your shelf (or in your HD) forever.
If you look at it this way, you can pay $20 to own it for 2 or 3 full playthroughs, or $50-70 for as many as you want. If you're not going to play the game multiple times, it's a no-brainer.

Obviously this is a discussion on new big-title games.
You're not getting Destiny for $5-15 when it comes out.

To add to that, I find the best method is to buy the game at full price, get my play out of it, sell it, and then rebuy it a year or two down the road if I want to play it again. I usually end up spending 30-40 on the game total, rather than 50+ and having it sit unused for months at a time.

To add to the conversation, there is very little benefit to digital purchases over retail.
1) You don't actually own a tangible product that you can sell, trade, give away, etc. essentially you're paying for the right to play the game instead of playing to own a product.
2) No cost difference on new releases despite drastic cost differences in production.
3) Limited space on hard drives -- The Last of Us Remastered is a 40GB download and is technically a last gen game. They're only going to get bigger. 500GB (or even a larger external hard drive) will fill up pretty fast with download sizes that huge. You lose the convenience. If you can only store 8-10 games (keeping in mind installs and patches), you'll lose the convenience of switching back and forth easily (really the only actual benefit of going all digital). It's much more convenient to get up and switch discs then to wait 2+ hours for an old game you had to delete to re-download.

I'm tempted to but there's replay value on the last of us
With that said, isn't there a CP thread for trading, exchanging games?

It's just a lot easier to trade-in a game to EB/BestBuy/Future Shop. I rather get less for games then deal with people on Kijiji.

Digital should be a lot cheap with no production, delivery, middle man costs...but its not
combine that with the fact they know you can't resell it, trade it ect.
I always do the E3 pre-order deals for games I know will be AAA and only buy digital when its deeply discounted
You will make more on ebay rather than trades and its pretty easy just have to go to the post office

I have to argue your number 3. The games on PS4 and X1 install to the HD with or without the disc. The difference is negligible afaik. I have about 15 games installed on my X1 (various sizes) and only recently needed the external HD. Even then I had about 15% left on my internal. Now with a 1TB drive ($60 not a big deal) I could easily fit 10 or more games. How many games do you really need? Even with discs eventually you will run out of room on your HD. Older games can be deleted if need be. Re-downloading is not a big deal to me.
Also the benefit for me is I don't have a bunch of discs that I need to carry around or store. Thats obviously a personal preference. I probably have 50 + games on steam, glad I don't need to find a disc if I decide to install one, just download it. Its easy and convenient.

Its sad but true, I often see things I would buy but don't because it will probably be a hassle.

Yep. I loathe dealing with Kijiji buyers and it's just easier to go to EB and get some store credit or pre-order on another games. I never replay games so there's no point in me keeping them unless of course they are sports or driving games. I would be totally down with digital games if the prices were set properly to which they are not because getting rid of the packing, shipping, middle man should amount to at least $15-20 below retail and until that happens I'm simply not going to go this route when I can collect store credit for trade-ins.
