Well Byron is essentially a spare part. He's expected to be in the Flames lineup, but if Baertschi or Gaudreau beats him for a spot, there's no problem waiving Byron. He might not even get picked up.

We also had to reach the cap floor. If young players perform better than established players, the latter will sit or be dealt.

Sven seems like your standard 4th year player in that it will take him 4 years as a pro to really put it all together. That's the trajectory for lots of young players. Nothing to be upset about.

I am not upset. I am worried. There was always bust potential attached to Sven given his size. Sven needs to be a goal scorer. If he's not scoring goals, I am not sure if he offers enough at the NHL level.

When he was up with Hudler and Monahan I thought his playmaking skills were enough to stick to the NHL level. The problem is you need to be able to play with other players and still be able to produce which he was not able to show.

Byron could potentially be our 4C, thus allowing room for both Sven and Gaudreau on the team. Also there will always be injuries so if they play well, they could both be on the roster out of camp.

Nobody knows what Byron is or what his ceiling is at this point. He is only 25 and hasn't even had a full NHL year yet.

He played very well last year, I'm excited to see what he does with a full season.

Completely agree with this. I think he'll continue to be a .5 PPG player, 35 points in 70 games, he showed day in and day out that no matter what your size is, you can be an NHLer if you give it your all. It's guys like him I was thrilled to have resigned with us. If he wasn't so under the radar, I am pretty sure at least one team could have used the guy.

I would suggest 30-40 pt 3rd/2nd line tweener would be his upside given his career so far (in juniors, AHL and NHL). He's never really been a big scorer since he turned pro and he certainly doesn't seem to possess the elite skill a small man like him needs to be a top 6 player in this league, from what I've seen. Don't get me wrong, I like Byron but I'd be shocked if he gets close to even a Mason Raymond type career.
