I'd in this group (I don't have the money and/or talent and/or car to be in the dedicated group), so I'm pulling for the one that's closer to town!

I think having a track that's much closer to a large metro center is also much more desirable if they ever have a hope of drawing in some of the bigger racing series. That is if that's even in their plans.

I'm not sure why they are even considering adding a kart racing track, since the Calgary kart club is already building a new track of their own...

Here is a couple of pictures of the new kart track being built by the CKRC (Calgary Kart Racing Club)

From the website - http://www.ckrc.com/
Quote:
After 13 very successful years running our own facility on leased land at the old Race City location, we were forced off the site at the end of the 2013 to allow expansion of Calgary’s Shepard Landfill.

2014 became a rebuilding year, we have secured a 20+ year lease in the town of Strathmore, a 30 minute drive East of the City limits – AND WE HAVE BROKEN GROUND ON THE NEW TRACK!

Racing will likely start in the late August/early September timeframe with a full season racing in 2015.

Construction was originally slated for May immediately after the Development hearing, but our permit was not finalized until June 30 after an appeal. Volunteers from the CKRC, and two other motorcycle clubs groups who will also use the new facility, started fencing the 20 acre site the following week.
Perimeter fencing was completed July 19. Earth movers have already marked the outline of the track itself, and placed material for sound berms to the North. Grading equipment is due onsite Aug 5th to do the final base preparation before the actual paving takes place.

The track will be 8m wide and nearly 1300m long. In comparison the track at the old site was about 1100m long (centre line measurement) and 9m wide. The new track has much more elevation changes, approximately 7m, rising and falling around a very exciting technical, and more compact layout than before. The facility hasexcellent spectator sightlines and the paved cut-offs between corners allow multiple track configurations for added excitement.

I'm all for more than one option when it comes to cart racing. I would be more likely to get involved with cart racing and would love to see more effort and options for growing the community.

I guess that means there won't be any good spectator events then either? I'm disappointed.

Finally, another good reason to drive right through Airdrie.

The reason they'd build this in Airdrie, instead of Calgary, is cheaper land values. Probably the same reason the complainant lives in Airdrie.

I stopped reading after this:

Quote:
Airdrie residents already suffer from the burden of undesirable sound from: trains, vehicle traffic on an increasingly busy QEII highway, and flights in and out of the Calgary International Airport and Airdrie Airpark.
I wonder if those train tracks, the QE2 and YYC airport were located there before Airdrie....

It's probably another topic for a thread of its own, but the NIMBYism as shown there is just so irritating. When did people begin to believe that they have the right to live in complete isolation from the activities of other human beings? Maybe it's an instinct that goes back to the caveman days, but when you share the planet with billions of others, you will occasionally have to accept that other people do things that you do not.

I'm not into car racing and will probably never go to this facility, but if it doesn't belong in a field outside of the city, where should it go? Should we tear up Fish Creek Park instead?

I was excited to see this development but after reading that response it looks to me like a bunch of rich guys building a private track. Doesn't sound like something many of us would have an opportunity to use, or enjoy as a spectator.

I'm not intending to be part of the community but I really hope there is an opportunity to possibly get into some form of kart racing. When I was growing up I was really into kart racing and watching IRL/CART but the opportunities in and around the Calgary area were very limited. I'd love to get my kid into some kart racing in a couple of years if this track has a reasonable program.

I have nothing against the track, but what I do have big concerns with is the sustainability of two tracks so close to each other. What this reeks of is a private high wealth group not happy with the Badlands track, or perhaps it's owner, that want to create their own playground. Having two this close to each other will only dilute the already thin crowds that will even pay to use these tracks, making both probably money losing ventures. I wish the community would just stick to one and make it a really good one.
