Flames Flames hire Jordan Sigalet as goalie coach

Kevin Woodley @KevinisInGoal
Sounds like Calgary Flames have new goalie coach in Jordan Sigalet, who gets promoted from their AHL affiliate. Great coach + better person

Kevin Woodley @KevinisInGoal
Got to watch Sigalet work in Abbotsford + loved way combined video, high tech tools, technique + tactics to adapt to each goalie's strengths

Kevin Woodley @KevinisInGoal
Ultimate example was Barry Brust + Danny Taylor, who couldn't be more different as goalies. worked together + turned both into AHL all stars

If PMM approves this decision, that's good enough for me

Article on Sigalet and his battle with MS.

http://www.vancouversun.com/health/H...725/story.html

I think you can give some credit to Sigalet for Ortio's North American comeback.

Happy for Sigalet. He's done a good job if Ortio and others are an example. So where does this leave Reto Schürch who was rumoured to have the inside track? Maybe as the AHL coach?

now official:

Sean Kelso @kelsohockey
@NHLFlames name Jordan Sigalet as the goaltending coach. He has been with the Abby Heat the past two seasons in the same capacity. Congrats!

Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that they have named Jordan Sigalet as the Goaltending Coach.

Sigalet spent the past two seasons serving as the goaltending coach with the Flames AHL affiliate in Abbotsford after two years as the goaltending coach in Everett (WHL).

Jordan was originally drafted from Victoria (BCHL) by the Boston Bruins in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft before going on to play three years at Bowling Green University (CCHA) where he was a CCHA All-Star in both 2003 and 2004 and won the Terry Flanagan Award for perseverance. He spent three seasons with the Providence Bruins, Boston’s AHL affiliate and was the recipient of the Fred Hunt Memorial Trophy before concluding his playing career in Vienna, Austria in 2009.

Jordan joins head coach Bob Hartley, associate coach Jacques Cloutier, assistant coach Martin Gelinas, skills coach Domenic Pittis and video coach Jamie Pringle to round out the Flames 2014-15 coaching staff.

...all this time to simply promote from within? Interesting. I wonder if they had external candidates that they wanted but couldn't land. Hard to argue with his results though - Joni's season last year was stellar.

Why does it have to mean something? Maybe they looked at a few candidates and Sigalet was the best option. Interviewing and due diligence take time.

Edit. On topic: I have no opinions one way or another because I don't know any goalie coaches well. But I agree it's pretty hard to ignore the development of Ortio, Brust, and Taylor's performance.

Siggy's an awesome person and an extremely diligent coach. He puts in a stupid amount of video, technical and hands-on work with his goalies. Ortio couldn't say enough good things about him all year.

The biggest thing you'll notice is he's a bit of a "new age" goalie coach in the sense that he uses all the technology and software available to him to help him teach better and communicate his lessons more effectively.

As a person he's extremely laid back and, like most goalies, he's a funny guy. Always good for quotes.

Yes, I'm biased, but I really like this hiring.

I just wanted to expand on my earlier comment about how he uses technology and software.

Where many AHL goalie coaches would simply use the AHL Live feeds after the game as their raw video for teaching, Sigalet would personally sit in the press box and videotape his goalies from a static angle. While he's doing that, he'd have two laptops open. One for his video and one for manually recording shots, shot attempts and chances. The software that he used to record the shots and the data he collected were available to both the Heat and Flames management, which is invaluable in teaching the position.

Like I said, the guy's a non-stop worker.

I don't know until they pop into my head! haha.

My mandate was more or less to focus on the players and really concentrate on the future and the rebuild.

Would've made a nice story though, I agree.

Yeah, if only we could've snagged that Roy guy.

Look around the league and there are loads of head coaches/assistants who had a cup of coffee/short/lack lustre careers as NHL'ers and plied their trade mostly in the AHL/college. In fact their work ethic, diligence, and being a student of the game brought them mostly to where they were as players and translates into great coaching careers.

Very well could be. A friend of mine who was offered a one year deal to take over the goalie coach duties for the Adirondack Flames, but he turned it down. He wanted two years in order to move his family, which while I was disappointed, I totally understand.

Looks like the Flames have hired Scott Gouthro to replace Sigalet at Adirondack

Screaming Eagles @CBSEHockey
Congrats to former CBSE Goaltender Coach Scott Gouthro on his new job as Goaltender Development Coach with the Calgary Flames organization!

Eagles Nation @CBSEaglesHockey
Gouthro will work primarily with the Adirondack Flames (@AHLFlames), Calgary's top minor league affiliate.
