The CBA says the Hawks have his rights up to and including August 15th. Therefore the earliest he can sign is August 16th.

The long-running favorite in the minds of many is Calgary, which long ago drafted and this spring signed both of Hayes's linemates, Gaudreau and center Bill Arnold. Hayes has, in the past, called the two players his best friends.
It's difficult to put into words just how badly these three players, playing together for the vast majority of this past season, torched college hockey. The stats themselves tell a pretty simple story: In the 26 of BC's 40 games they played as linemates, the three combined for 54-70-124. Absolutely ludicrous production from three guys who were probably in the top six players in all of college hockey last season. And the thing is, it would be easy to dismiss any of their production as being the result of Gaudreau simply being awe-inspiring (he is), but they actually worked exceptionally well together overall.

And all that sounds like Calgary is the most ideal scenario for Hayes, who as a right wing would probably be able to slot in very nicely indeed with the Flames' NHL depth down that side. Their current No. 2 natural right winger — i.e. not a guy converted from the left side — is Brian McGrattan, and no, that's not a typo.

He specifically said natural RWs as opposed to converted LWs.

No it doesn't, it said he's the number 2 NATURAL right winger. David Jones would be number 1. Jiri Hudler and Joe Colborne both played different positions before, and are only being tried at RW because there are no other options.

That article makes it sound like Kevin Hayes is going to be awesome. Sounds good to me.

The day is actually tomorrow. Chicago still holds his rights until the 16th.
And I think they're pretty good. As good or better than any other team.

Pros- We have his BC linemates and best friends
- We are weak at RW
- Our NHL roster is one of the easiest to crack in the NHL
Cons- He is an American
- He is from the East
- There are plenty of teams closer to home that would be happy to have him
I have no idea what are chances are. Nobody here does really. But at least we have an opportunity to offer him, so we probably have some chance.

Silly post is silly, and to the third point, all 30 teams would be happy to have him. All I see in these posts are pros.

This is interesting.
The Flames are in with a shout, but it isnt tragic one way or the other. It would be sweet if it happened though.
Free extra first round pick.

It was pros and cons for the Flames chances of signing Kevin Hayes...not Kevin Hayes himself.
Also the American thing wouldn't be a pro anyways. :P

For those of us in the West, I believe Hawks lose his rights as of 10 pm MST on August 15th.

Luckily that mistake was the last line of the Flames write-up. Well written article and I'm sure will be getting some exposure.

Bowman officially gives up on signing Hayes:

Quote:
“We offered Kevin what we believed was a generous and fair contract," Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a statement. "Unfortunately, he felt it was in his best interests to become a free agent. We are looking forward to the compensatory draft pick we are receiving and are focused on the excitement surrounding the start of training camp next month.”

Actually, I think there is a real possibility they try Baertschi on the right this season.
Agreed that the article is well written. Good read.
