what a weird morning show.. talking about how the Flames need to lose tonight to Buffalo and then the important 4 pointer against Edmonton in the weekend that the Flames must lose.

Then making fun of Patrick Roy's English.
This is the Flames flagship station?
At least it's more interesting then listening to Kirsh and Humphries in the afternoons. They are brutal on hockey central at noon since Ryan Leslie left the FAN.

They were kidding about that. Eric D came on and explained the importance of playing your best every game.

This is an ongoing joke for most of the season.... its the race for the #1 overall draft pick.
Dowboy is doing the afternoon show today. I know many of you don't like his opinions, but he is a pro on the radio. The FAN960 probably wouldn't mind having a lightning rod personality that will get people talking. He has good connections for guests.
Today he plans to smack Oiler Nation . . .

This is brutal listening to Francis and Kirshe defend season ticket prices and talk about how it's "not a fan's right to go to the games". These guys are brutal and I think I'm done listening in the afternoon.
Francis "Fans have no right to complain about ticket prices when you can buy a $20 ticket from Sportschek" then goes on to say he's had season tickets for 12 years and always sells his tickets because he sits in the press box. #wanker

Unlistenable as they may be, the point is valid. If you want to see the best hockey league in the world, well... pay up. If you want to go watch hockey live, you have the Hitmen, Royals, Canucks, Dinos, Trojans, Buffaloes, etc that all need your hockey dollars.
Personally, I like going to one or two games a year. It keeps the experience special.

Starting to? This has been happening for years - mispronouncing names, using the wrong names, etc. Maher is a HOFer no question and he's earned every bit of respect and love he has in this city, but he's no longer at the top of his game and it's really not debatable.
He broadcasts the games over radio. As long as he gets the goals right... really who cares? His job is to bring emotion through the radio, and he does that with flying colors.
People give Bob Cole #### for this same thing, and all I can do is submit these clips for your consideration.
Decide for yourself what you want from your PBP man. Hughson always gets names right.

It's fair to say that Rhett is the very best thing on this radio station. He's terrific. His level of not giving a crap is whimsically over the top. I had no idea he lost the Sportsnet TV gig because he flat out decided not to go do a game in Dallas. That is outstanding.

He's right though. Don't want to go? Don't pay. You're not entitled to cheap tickets

I know Pinder is in for Boomer this week on the morning show but he's got to learn how to do radio interviews properly. He never resets the interview so I have no idea who he interviewing.
Yesterday and today he interviewed a local guy who is playing or has played in the KHL. I set my alarm to the Fan590 in the morning and as I'm slowly waking up sometimes I miss the beginning when he introduced the guest. Interviews on radio are usually 10-15 minutes long and the host at least once, usually twice has to remind the listener who he's talking to. This isn't tv, I can't see the guest or see a caption at the bottom of the screen.
So yesterday he's just asking question after question and the KHL stories are interesting but I have no idea who he's talking to until the end.. "Thanks.. that was former Flames Jordan Henry"
and today I missed the beginning again.. good KHL stories for 10 minutes. I have no idea who he's talking to until the end "Thanks, that's former world junior gold medal winning goalie Jeff Glass"
reset the interview!

The morning show really struggles when there is nothing hockey related to talk about. They are terrible at this time of year. Were far removed from last season, the draft and free agency are over, and the preseason is still a ways away. The morning show will talk a bit about baseball but do little more than provide game recaps. NFL preseason is underway and we hear next to nothing and zero about any other sport. Instead, we hear these guys chat about anything and everything but sports. Pretty terrible. I get that during hockey season, hockey is what most listeners might want to hear. But right now, when theres nothing else going on, talk about other sports for fuds sake instead of talk of your crappy fat arses.

There aren't enough listeners that want to hear about that stuff.
You may want it - but the station does a lot of work to identify what works and doesn't work. Tons of NFL/MLB talk (outside the Jays) doesn't work. NFL Pre-season talk? That will get too many Calgary listeners turning the dial for sure.
I think the guys do a great job
