I think the Flames have as good of shot as anyone. However, I don't know what people expect long term out of Hayes? I see a likely 3rd line RW, with 2nd line upside. I feel we already have that in Colborne. While I'd be happy if we signed him, because we would be adding a quality young player without giving up any assets, I just don't know if this is a top 6 player long term in the NHL. He may very well be, and the Flames should sign him because you can never have to many of these types of young guys. I just don't view him as a lock for anything, but his all around package sure is enticing!

I don't see him making any NHL roster to start the season. He will need time in the AHL first.

Probably. But it is also practically guaranteed that he will sign a NHL contact in the next week.

If this kid is demanding a roster spot as part of a clause as to where he signs, I'd pass on him.

You would pass on him a big young huge potential RW for being confident enough that he thinks he can crack the line up on a 27th place team
This is why Treliving calls the shots.

I would pass on a kid who thinks he's entitled to a roster spot before he earns it. What message does that send to the rest of the team, to the guys working hard for the last two years to earn a spot?
Yeah, I'd pass.
It also goes against everything Treliving has spoke to about young players so you can bet the Flames would never guarantee him a spot.
Having said that, there is absolutely no evidence he expects or will request it as part of a deal, so it's all moot at this point anyway.

I don't care if we are a 27th place team, I don't see a spot on the roster for him.

Yes I would, how did that work out when Sven was gifted a spot last season? I'm not even sure he's NHL ready either, I think Arnold is more ready than him (I know different positions but nonetheless), and he's likely to spend an entire year in the NHL as well.
And as the other poster mentioned, it sends the wrong message to everyone else about having to earn your spot.

There is a difference between a player demanding a roster spot and a player being confident that he thinks he can earn a spot.
If he is confident that he can crack the line up, than let him earn it. He thinks he can do it, then let him prove it.
Demanding an NHL roster spot with his background is entitlement. There is really nothing in his amateur hockey career to indicate he is a surefire, can't miss NHL player that can demand NHL roster.
That being said, there is no evidence that Hayes is asking for guaranteed NHL ice time. All his public remarks is that he is looking for the best opportunity to break into the NHL.

Where is this speculation that he is demanding a spot on the roster???
And how did it devolve into bashing him for it?

I think it is implied from his status as an unsigned college UFA. Some people have rather uncritically assumed from the analogous situation with Justin Schultz that, like Shultz, all players who do not come to terms with their draft team must be looking for an early payday and guarantees of NHL ice time. Many of the same sorts of things were presumed about Johnny Gaudreau before he signed his contract this Spring.
Fortunately, I suspect that not every young player is like Justin Schultz.

No one (besides the Oilers) is going to promise him a spot in the NHL. Corbin Knight wanted to come here and sign last year because he thought he'd have a shot at making the team... pretty similar situation except that one did cost the Flames an asset.

Which may be one of the reasons Feaster got let go. Kid wanted to come here, no need to spend an asset to acquire him, should have ridden it out until he was a ufa. But I digress...
