NSFW obviously:

Spoiler!

Apparently Stewart had taken Ward out a lap earlier and Ward was trying to confront him like you see sometimes in NASCAR.

Stewart then ran him over.

Who knows if he saw him in time, they both dodged the same way, or if he was going to fast - track was under caution at the time. Investigation will comment I am sure.

EDIT: It looks like some of the anger online is coming from how Stewart was going to race today anyhow but likely was pulled by the team only close to race time. Not sure how much slower you are supposed to go during caution; I almost never watch racing myself.

Sounds like he wanted to give Stewart a piece of his mind. Hot temper unfortunately cost him his life? NASCAR should start heavily fining drivers who get out of their car angry, it's so dangerous. Poor kid, and poor Stewart who now has to deal with having killed someone. Sad story all around.

If you watch the video the first driver swerves out of the way at the last second and the 2nd driver (tony) doesn't have time. My first watch I thought the first driver hit him. Doesn't look intentional. Just incredibly stupid. These types of incidents with drivers getting out happens a few times a year just without the tragic consequence.

From watching the video, it sounds like an engine revs close to the time of the impact. Hopefully it is simply coincidence. I occasionally watch racing and I have seen numerous accidents in which a driver exits his car to confront an oncoming car/driver. There should be heavy fines or suspensions to curtail these events.

Tragic incident and thoughts go to the family.

Call it insensitive, but what the hell was that guy doing essentially running out into traffic? People who's temper over rules common sense usually don't live long.

100% Agree. I think you nailed it, in that his temper got the best of him. Drivers have done this before in much more dangerous circumstances and gotten away with it but its a big no-no for sure.

He could have saved his rage for after the race and gone at Stewart driver to driver instead of going at him in the car while the race was essentially still green flagged.

Motorsports is no different than any other pro sport and tempers will flare, although most of the blow ups occur in the pit lane or paddock in a face to face confrontation after the drivers are out of their rides.

Context is fun.

Billy bit another dog.
Billy is a dog, and bit a fellow dog.

Billy bit another dog.
Billy is not a dog, and has a history of biting dogs. He's a bit strange.

Tony Stewart killed another driver.
Tony is a driver and was involved in a crash that killed a fellow driver. He's not a driver serial killer.

That's some crazy stuff. Guy basically ran out into the middle of traffic to point/yell at a driver, hoping no one runs him over. That's just so...not smart. Unfortunate accident, but car vs person never ends well for the person.

Tony Stewart killed ANOTHER driver!

He is out of control killing every driver in sight.

If that's what the thread title made you think then that's your fault not the OP.

Nascar and all of it's affiliates will learn from this and implement the no getting out of your car until the track crew arrives rule. Terrible accident but he really should not have been out on the track like that in the first place.

In fairness to the confused, the word killed also tends to imply intent when used in this way.

Pretty much any news story about this uses the word "kills" or "killed".

Yeah, frankly this is 100% the fault of the driver that ran onto the track. There should be massive fines/suspensions handed out to drivers doing this kind of thing.

So? It's still inaccurate. And most media outlets are crap.
