The Last Good Politician
I am admittedly hard on and pessimistic of politics and politicians as a whole. I generally don't even vote as I find it hard to favour one over the other taking the view that they're all liars anyway so it really doesn't matter.
We have had so many terrible examples lately, and of course I'm a hard-to-convince skeptic so I'm interested to hear:
Who is a great, and recent, politician? Who stands out as someone who hasn't fallen into the trappings of "the game"? Are there really any?

There are lots of good politicians. The problem is, being a good politican generally goes unnoticed as they're just doing their jobs.
You're probably asking for the last great politican. One who stands out above the rest.
I'd agree with Nenshi above. Jim Flaherty is considered to be the good ones , admittedly I'm not that familiar with his overall work.
The thing is, people will confuse a great politician with their own ideological beliefs.

Not at all. I belong to this forum as a Flames fan, I don't live in Calgary. Nenshi does seem like "a good one" but not living there I don't know as much about him as the Calgary residents here.
I really just wonder, again likely due to my terribly pessimistic view of politics and politicians, how many people vote for a candidate that they truly like and believe in, or at least think they will just do the best job possible vs. voting for the least crummy of the crummy picks.
Who was the last politician that actually inspired anything in you? Who you actually believed could make a difference for the better?
I'm aware that Calgarians are pretty in to Nenshi.

I'm sure there are a lot of politicians who start out as good people with good intentions, and then that all gets eroded by the machine as they work their way up. I doubt anyone who's at the top of the pyramid has any sort of real integrity left.
In the US, it's probably 10x as bad considering the amount of power (and money) lobby groups have over there.

I guess that's the eroding integrity part. The higher up you go, the more people you have to please, and the less of an honest opinion you can have. Actual opinions tend to piss a lot of people off, so they just slowly learn to not really say anything of consequence. I'm sure term 2 Nenshi is a little less honest and open than term 1 Nenshi was.

I am a solid NDPer, so I'll skip Jack, Ed and Tommy...
I liked Joe. But I'm going to go with Conservative Hugh Segal who ran against Joe for party leadership. I think Hugh got into politics for the right reasons - to improve Canada and help people. I have heard him do many interviews and I never got the impression that he was in it for himself or the power; he just wanted to make this a better country.

Your Mayor, Melissa Blake, is pretty awesome. She's had a pretty stellar run and after three and a half terms she's still massively popular up there.

I don't see any evidence of that, but then again I'm in the bubble.
I do think that operating outside a party system is a massive advantage in this regard.
I'd also add that despite Edmontion being no good, they do have a stellar Mayor in Don Iveson. He's new and very young, but proving himself effective.
