A few things to consider:
-if you dont wear rings right now, you may want to chose a lighter metal as a heavier metal may make wearing the ring bothersome
-how bothered will you be by scratches? Will you feel they add character or that they make the ring look like crap? This will impact whether you want or need a durable metal
-width. You say 5mm but try rings on. If you have big hands 5mm kay be small or if you have tiny boy hands 5mm may be big
-consider a ring from titanium or tunsgten with a precious metal inlay. This may satisfy your wifes desire for your ring. You can get the inlay to match her ring.
Lots of great thoughts there. I got small fingers, and even 5 mm looks a bit big in my opinion, but I just can't get anything smaller or else it looks too femme to me. I will definitely think about the metal inlay as an option as well!

I have a tungsten band from Blue Nile that cost me $160. Looks good, doesn't scratch, doesn't tarnish and cleaves easy if caught in something (rather than taking your finger with it). I bought two because I frequently lose things and prefer a loose ring, though I still haven't lost the first yet.
Another reason why I do not want to shell out loads of money on a ring.... I have lost my engineering iron ring several times. I warned her I may lose this ring too. She just gave me the death stare and said we will choose a ring expensive enough so that I will be extra careful with it...

I am not telling the OP to do it, but I am going to disagree on this. Like everything, you can't say every ring that is expensive is insane to buy.

My ring is about the same price range as Tron, but I have no regrets on buying it. I got it at a local store here in town, and sure I could have went online and saved a bit, but they had it and I really liked it.

To tell you the truth I have no idea what it is made of anymore. I think it is platinum with white gold, and a very tiny band of diamonds. I didn't get it to impress anyone, at that price I could of got a massive championship ring sized band with tacky jewels all over.

However, I wanted something different that wasn't your typical mass produced mainstream ring. I have to wear this for the rest of my life I want something I am proud to wear and is different. Not to show off but is something I like looking at everyday. Just is a personal preference.

Keep in mind insane to me is what some folks who buy a $200 ring, but blow $60K+ on a wedding party. My wife and I did a very high class wedding for only 105 people at an upscale restaurant here in town and paid very little comparatively. So we used some of the savings on some items we thought we'd get longer term value for (our rings, honeymoon, down payment on our house, etc.).

Ol' cliche, different strokes, different folks I guess.

Meh. Gives it character.

Ideally you should try to get something you like and has meaning if possible. If you are going to wear something everyday, get something you like.

I custom designed my wife's engagement ring and based our wedding bands off of that. The design had northern lights rippling around the ring and was based on an artistic structural support we developed for a statue he did a few years earlier. I find it cool because it gives me a story to tell for our rings.

Bonus: You can use your titanium wedding band to open beer bottles and impress everyone who isn't your wife at parties!

Buy cheap, spend the money on the Wife. Oh and maybe order 4 or 5 for replacements when you lose them.

I bought my band from Troy Shoppe Jewelers in Bridgeland. If you are still thinking around that price point stop in and check them out. I have bought quite a few things from them over the years including my wedding band, the wife's engagement ring and band along with some necklaces and earrings. I always find them to be super helpful with whatever I am looking for.

My husband wanted the cheapest available so I went to DeBerj? in Market Mall during their store closing sale and only spent $100 on a tungsten ring. Not sure if theyr'e still there but they had amazing deals.

I give your marriage two years.

Buy what you want, and pay what you want. She doesn't get to decide.

Boom. $3500 ring bill.
This is when you ask for a nice watch. I think a nice watch is the man's equivalent of an engagement ring that wives should get for their husbands to "prove their love".

We're living in an equal world ladies, time to pony up.

Exactly. The only piece of jewelry that is acceptable on a man is a watch. If you want me to wear something fancy that "shows how much I love you", buy me a Rolex.

I spent $400 or $500 on a band, what a terrible idea. I didn't like wearing a ring in the first place and nobody ever noticed the damn thing anyways. I eventually lost it, took it off for hockey and it got lost between the rink and home. I replaced it with a much cheaper titanium one and again nobody noticed. Stopped wearing it altogether years ago anyways.

Not something I see worth putting a lot of money into but flashing things are not my style anyways.

Prince Charles is the product of hundreds of years of inbreeding. Sure he has shoes from 1960, but if marrying your 3rd cousin removed is civilized, I am proud to be a part of the dregs of humanity.
