Yeah, I just read that. Still, I guess if things ever got bad between Subban and the team in a few years he could give them the green light to get traded anyway.

posting obligatory Brodie will get paid. How does PK compare with TJ on advance stats/
Good deal for the Habs, PK is a gamebreaker and class act regardless of what the advance stats say.

Nothing against Brodie, but he's not in Subban's league no matter what the stats say.
They aren't comparable players.

That is not entirely true. NTC/NMCs can't take effect until the player would have been eligible for Group 3 unrestricted free agency. Pretty sure Subban's NMC can't take effect until after 2015-16.
As to the dollar figure, an interesting one. It seems clear that both sides compromised. Crazy that $9 million per year can be considered a compromise.

Suter will make 10M a year, on average, for the first 8 years of his contract that will will see him turn 35. He still have 18M left on his contract after.
Subban will have the highest cap-hit, but his 72M contract is significantly lower than Suter's 98M contract and especially Weber's 110M contract, so I wouldn't say he's the highest paid defenseman at all.

Buying UFA years, and trying to buy some good will back maybe.

He better keep improve and be a Norris contender every year to be worth it. Other than the lockout (short year) he has not put up points worth $9MM.

I don't even think he needed a great season to get paid like this. He earned it in the playoffs imo.

That's the thing. He hasn't arrived at the level of production for this type of contract. Also, as much he is a game maker is a game loser. Very exciting player to watch though.

He is going to be 33/34 when this contract is up. There is a high likelyhood he could sign a similar or even larger contract then as long as he stays healthy. Premiere d-men can be highly productive well into their late 30's early 40's.

This isn't true though. It's just a comment that is repeated so often people take it as fact.
He absolutely does stupid crap sometimes, but his good far outweighs his bad.

Montreal did what they had to do to keep a star player. Not remotely suprised at term or dollars. We will be faced with similar decisions in the coming years, hopefully our management will avoid playing games though.

Don't forget that the 9 in PQ is equivalent to, what, $8-8.2M in AB or Florida.

Yeah, the after tax dollars are definitely less sexy in QC.

He's an exciting player but IMO he's not one of the top 5 Dmen I want on my blueline to help my team win games.
It just seem rediculous to me how many guys make more than Crosbys 8.7 mil.

Crosby is an example to other players to take the money when you can get it because taking a hometown discount does nothing to ensure you will have success. The fact that Crosby took an artificially low number does not mean that other players have to make the same mistake.

this is just ridiculous. By the time Crosby's contract expires, #4 D will be making more than him. players trade $$ for security. Doesn't mean it will impact future deals though.
