That's kind of like distinguishing between wanting to see Roseanne Barr naked and actually seeing her naked.

Well we are worse this year than we were last year, so we are technically trending downwards. I guess it depends how we do this year, but if we don't improve, we are a downward trending team.
Darryl's record from the year before he was hired to the year after was 75, 94, 103, 96, 94, 98, 90, 94 so technically it wasn't really trending downwards, but more so stagnant. By comparison, Feaster was 90, (lockout, 42), 77 and we will see next year, so its kind of trending downward by comparison.

It's more like making the distinction that a courteous hello is not the same as "Hey my name is Huntingwhale, let's get greasy!"

Not so sure NY was the only team he would sign with but rather his preferred destination. Regardless, let's say NY was the only team he would go to. Sather was still willing to give a fair offer to land him. I'm sure GMs still want to conduct fair business. They risk him going back into the draft and not landing him at all. If we really were at such a disadvantage then why did he pay a fair price? Realistically two 2nds is nothing to land a player who was projected to go top 10 if he re-entered the draft. It's not like Sather knew he had an advantage on the Flames but somehow GM of the year Jay Feaster conned him into paying up. Realistically Sather was coming out ahead in the deal and offered up a reasonably fair return.

That whale guy is good at finding the line and completely jumping over it.

Ryan Smyth was LA Kings property. He wasn't a UFA. So Smyth says he admitted he thought about joining the Oilers' fierce provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames, but the pull of the Oilers was too strong.
He can't just decide to join the Flames, so the Flames obviously expressed interest in getting him. If not what is he thanking the Flames for?
But sure, go ahead and ignore what both Feaster and Smyth have said about the situation and pretend that Jay Feaster didn't try to land Ryan Smyth if you want for whatever reason.
How bizarre.

Again, what did Calgary offer the Kings for Smyth?

I'm not Dean Lombardi, Jay Feaster or Ryan Smyth, so I don't know.
Again, what was Ryan Smyth thanking the Flames for in his conference call about getting traded to the Oilers?

late round draft pick is what TSN was saying what was rumoured
http://www.sportshoopla.com/forums/n...calgary-2.html
We can only reference msg boards cause twitter feeds and TSN seem to get updated, kind of annoying:

Gord Miller says Smyth to Calgary is close, and it'll be for a late round pick.

Smyth deal is there to be done for draft pick(s) only, but CGY ownership currently debating whether it wants to take the plunge.

OK. So they tried, but not very damn hard it seems like. This sounds way more like tire kicking to me, but if you really want to call it proof of an attempt, knock yourself out.
He ended up going back to Edmonton for Colin Fraser and a 7th? That is pretty high stakes they bowed out of. I wonder what Edmonton was offering before Lombardi pronounced Calgary was in the mix. Or are you saying Lombardi let himself get into an Iginla like mess, and the deal with Calgary was done before Smyth kaiboshed it? That would be inexcusable.

Ryan Smyth had a NTC. Didn't matter what the Flames were offering if he refused to waive it to go here.

This is like a game of cat and mouse
defender : "Feaster never went after Smyth, that was just made up by media"
accuser : "Yes he did, here is quotes from Feaster"
defender : "that proves nothing, just says it was an alternative plan"
a : "well here is a quote from Smyth saying they tried"
d : "well that is just a player trying to embellish percieved interest in himself. what was offered?"
a : "late round pick. here is the source"
d : "ok they tried, but not very hard it seems like"
ah the dog days of summer. When do we sign Kevin Hayes?

You don't know?
Bizarre.
Clearly, what one perceives as interest, another would perceive as due diligence. Take the Richard's debacle for example. The Flames were on record stating they cleared cap space to make room for, and admitted to offering more than NY for his services. That is cut and dry, and I do not see the Smyth "attempt" in the same light.

Furthermore, as loose lipped as Feaster was, it should be easy to hear him say, "Shucks another one got away!" Cripes, even a quote Phanuthier provided states the Flames brass isn't sure if they are willing to go through with it, so how is it so cut and dry in your eyes?
There are lots of REAL issues to roast Feaster with, I just don't see the Smyth rumours as one of them. Carry on with your BBQ.

Sorry for the multi posts... Can you please direct me to where Feaster makes himself out to be a martyr? I still can't see it.

Feasters team last year was better than the team the year before in terms of winning percentage. Not that I am defending him but I would bet that Burke and Treliving will have a team this year and next year that is worse than the 13/14 team put together by Feaster in terms of winning percentage. I am guessing if that is the case that would mean that Burke and Treliving are inferior to Feaster?

Feaster's first two years aim was to make the playoffs, the same as Sutter. He failed terribly. Burke and Treliving's aim is to do a sensible rebuild. Their record at this point is largely irrelevant.
