Because most of us have never seen him play a minute of hockey, how many times have you seen him play?
Goalies are also hard to get a read on at such an early stage in their career.
On the Flames alone:
1986: Jason Muzzati 1st rnd, 21st overall.
1990: Trevor Kidd 1st rnd, 11th overall.
1997: Evan Lindsay 2nd rnd, 32nd overall.
2000: Brent Krahn 1st rnd, 9th overall.
2001: Andrei Medvedev 2nd rnd, 56 overall.
2006: Leyland Irving 1st rnd, 26 overall.
Trevor Kidd is the only one who actually kind of panned out for the Flames and he was pretty crappy.

Yup, this pretty much sums up exactly why I won't vote for McDonald yet. 18 year old goaltenders are way too hard to judge. Think Pittsburgh regrets taking Fleury 1st overall in 2003 yet? How about the Islanders with DiPietro?

I'm not saying he should have been top 10 or anything, but we're ranking him 19th on just OUR list of prospects. He's had enough success so far to warrant the votes IMO. The only one I could see a justification for over him is Culkin.

This is my justification:
-He was ranked #50 by ISS
-15th by Central Scouting for European skaters
-42nd by TSN's Craig Button
-65th by Brendan Ross at The Scouting Bureau
-Sweden's 11th best 1996 born prospect by Jacob Nystrom of Hockey Sverige
-6'4" and 215lbs of nasty just-turned-18-two-days-ago kid
-Called "smart defensively" by every scouting report I read
I see big things with him. Pun intended

OM was a steal for a 6th round pick.

This is the first round it gets murkey for me. There are 4 guys still left I could vote for. But I am going with Culkin.
On MacDonald. He is a bit of a crapshoot goalie. 18. Poor junior stats. Drafted in a draft weak for goalies. But he is still a decent pick at this point. I have Culkin, Wolf, and Hickey ahead of him. I think Kanzig and Maatson are still in the mix as well. Maybe Roy.
Every player is a crapshoot at this point.

Hard to criticize any pick at this point. I voted for Wolf (accidentally went to Van Brabant) because of his success in a pro league but I could see Culkin being the choice for his growth or McDonald for his raw potential
I am still really dissapointed that the Flames picked McDonald at #34 instead of targeting a good young Dman. If we drafted McKeown I would be curious to see where we voted him, I am guessing top 10

Give him a year or two, he'll move up in the rankings if we see steady progression. I just can't bring myself to vote for an 18 year old goalie that I have never seen play.

If MacDonald was the best player available, then the Flames made the right choice.

I don't think that was really the case though. They picked him because they really wanted to draft a goalie, and this was their only real change to draft one of the higher ranked ones. It doesn't necessarily mean that he was the best player available though.
Personally, I agree with Neo45 on this one. Considering it's our biggest hole, the 2nd round should've been used on Dmen...there were still solid options available.

While we always want to get the organizational needs, I am going to sit back and trust the scouts. For the past few years, they haven't been disappointing us.

I believe in the Jays.

Culkin.
Goalies are Voodoo and he has overall better stats when looking at a same point comparison then the remaining CHL defenders.

You can make that argument about almost all picks after the first round. They should have taken defencemen but they took Smith because of his size and truculence, etc. Time will tell whether McDonald and Smith turn out to be astute selections or not. All I can say is that I have been impressed with my viewings of McDonald in Charlottetown and in tournaments.

These are phrases I'm tired of hearing. Can we add this to Sun's crusade against "truculence"?

Not trying to single you out, just a phrase that gets bounced around a lot and you happened to have used it last. Sorry.
