I went to my dealer and it was quite a bit cheaper than most independent shops I had called.

Just go to the dealership; in theory, you'll get original equipment parts put on by someone who knows what they are doing and a warranty that can be enforced.

Besides, with safety items, I'd rather know that they were installed correctly. Which isn't to say that some random garage couldn't do as good of a job, but still...

It depends on if its for an '85 Ford pickup or for a relatively new car.

Depending on the make of your car, I recommend allmakes auto repair shop. They do specialize in Subaru but they also work on imported type cars. Not American types.

be warned that if you go to a place like speedy, they'll likely find some toehr stuff that eneds to be fixed, and then they'll hit you with - well it is a safety issue, so the car can't leave here......but that bieng said, for the same service, they'll charge less and you'll have a longer warranty.....so pick your pioson - i guess

Brakes are just about the easiest car repair possible. I don't know how you could install them incorrectly.

For my car Midas was cheapest and they were professional, communicated well and didn't find any drama with the car. I'm satisfied with that

I found the hardest part was setting them up so they'd brake evenly otherwise you're just exchanging parts.

There's also that place called Brake Check on Centre Street and 16th Ave NW across the street from the New Asia Supermarket. I haven't been there myself but my uncle has and tells me to go one day.

I was told that if your brakes needed work they will let you know otherwise if its still in good working condition you don't need to get it fixed. Looks like there are only 3 of these in Calgary.

Get a Haynes manual, a $50 ratchet set from Crappy Tire, and some axle stands for $50 and try yourself. The money you save, even with the new tools, combined with the experience/education will serve you well for the rest of your life. Hell, replace and repack your bearings while you're at it. If you really #### it up then call AMA for a tow to a garage, but I doubt you will.

I just rolled 90,000km on a $600 '97 Rav 4 simply because I dared to teach myself some basics. $$$.

Good advice. The Haynes manuals are really handy, but you can accomplish the same thing by watching some youtube videos. You may not find one for your exact model, but disc brakes are disc brakes and you'll learn what you need to do the job properly.

That may be, but refilling the window washer fluid tank or changing the oil is pretty easy too, yet there are many reports of a garage doing those things incorrectly.

For my truck I was able to get akebono pads and brembo rotors delivered to calgary from www.rockauto.com for less than just the factory rotors alone would have cost me at the dealership.

I then had brake check (listed above) install them and new bearings i supplied for $250.

Sorry for the bump. I bought a car off private sale this summer and took it today to the original dealer for the first time I've had to service it myself. Mercedes wants $900 to replace the brakes on my 2008 ML320!!!

Is this a reasonable rate? I'm going to call and see why this is so high, if it's just pads or entire rotors, etc. that are going to be changed.

If not, where should I go for brakes to be replaced?

I took my car to an independent and they didn't use the right high temp grease...it ended up at the dealer anyway
