Brodie is going to get paid. He is much better than Gardiner.

Could turn into a good deal going forward, but seems like a lot of pesos out of the gate.

you know your team is bad when paying Gardiner 4m per year for 5 years isn't one of your worst 3 contracts ... or 5, for that matter.

All the more reason to sign him longterm now. He's only going to get more expensive the longer they wait. That goes for Backlund as well.

This contract starts for the 15/16 season, not 14/15.

No disagreements here. Both should be locked up for 6+ years.
IMO they should be the Flames priority right now.

Yes this contract would put them over by $1 million.
However, that is with 25 players.
Speculation is Colton Orr ($925K cap hit) will be sent to the AHL. Also probably will end up with Ashton ($850k cap hit) ends up in the AHL as well.

6+? 6 at the most. I'd easily give TJ a 5m x 6 years. Backlund... At most a 4x4, just depends on how he performs this year.

this isn't all that bad. gardiner has tremendous poise with the puck, great skater, just needs more time in the league and having a guy like robidas to learn from should only help.
i think gardiner has more offensive upside, whereas brodie has really become a great defensive player who is unreal at skating the puck out of the zone.
i'd be happy locking in brodie for 5-6 years at 4 million.

Why do you have to hyperbole every time you post? You can argue Brodie is better than Gardiner but he is not much better. Come on man...

just confirmed on capgeek, they are over the cap now.
if they do move orr/someone to the minors, aren't they still on the hook for the cap hit... i'm so confused with the cba updates, i thought u couldn't hide salary in the minors any more for one-way contracts.

Yeah, but that's with a 25 man roster they'll be compliant on opening night.

wtf. Just put me on ignore if you have to whine every time I post my opinion. You guys attack my posts when I don't like a move made by the Flames, but also when I'm optimistic about a player?
As a Flames fan, I can watch all 82 games of Brodie. I can also watch 40+ Leafs game a year with a standard Shaw sports package.
O Zone starts: 42.3% for Brodie, 43% for Gardiner
TOI% Quality of Comp: 29.5 for Brodie, 27.9 for Gardiner (significant difference in QoC) (the only Flame who faced tougher competition on the Flames was Gio, who had a Norris calibre season, whereas Gardiner had 3 other Leafs ahead of him)
5v5 CorsiF: 51.5% for Brodie, 46.4% for Gardiner (also consider that the Leafs, while not a good team, were much better than the Flames as a whole last season).
Brodie is at least 2 tiers above Gardiner. He is "much" better than Gardiner.
Not hyperbole. Just overreaction by you.

gardiner had the best corsi number of any leaf last season...
what gardiner brings as an advantage offensively, brodie brings defensively, so i really think it's a wash. i'd say both players are relatively equal in quality, just in different ways.

Remember when teams used to give fat, lengthy contracts to people who had proven themselves?
