The money was deposited, not spent.

I don't think you understand how Tangerine's High Interest Savings accounts work. Thats $500 spent my friend. That'll teach you to try to score free $100.

This comment confuses me. Are you saying that's a bad thing? Deposit $250 to get $50 in 30 days? That's a 20% ROI over a month. Shouldn't that be considered fantastic?

It is a good thing. My comment was in response to Slava's post where he thought he would only have to deposit $20 in order to get the $50 bonus.

I don't understand why you are saying I'm spending $500.
I'm depositing $500 into a savings and chequing account. How is this spending? Once I've deposited it are you saying its gone and I'll never be able to withdraw it?

Exactly, did you not read the terms and conditions on those Tangerine accounts? That $250 is locked in

or the white text on my original post, is this really that hard?

I opened an account with Tangerine and its been great so far. 2.5% interest on new deposits until July 31 and there website is really easy to use. It took about 5 minutes to open an account online.

Mind you, as far as banking bonuses go - the big banks have some good deals going on right now as well (until July 31).

Notice how the quote box there is longer than the text you quoted? It's almost as if there's a line of white text below that text that's hidden on the white page background.

The worst part is that he's quoted both my posts with white text. Which means the stuff in white is shown completely and obviously in black in the quote reply screen, along with the giant [COLOR] tags before and after it.

But yes, your $500 is not locked in and is not spend, I was making fun of the guy who implied it was.

Just received a notification from Tangerine about my $250 depost into the savings acccount and the $250 deposit into the chequing account.

The savings account $$ was deposited on July 28 and is "on hold" till Aug 5
The savings account $$ was deposited on July 29 and is "on hold till Aug 6

By the way, I already got a $25 "referral" bonus deposited into my chequing account so the account balance is now $275

The on hold times are to allow the funds to clear. It's standard when you move money into the Tangerine accounts from whatever other financial institution you deal with.

I knew that. Quite normal in the banking industry to put a 5 day hold on cheques until they clear.

I assumed that green text was not required for my last post...guess I assumed wrong.

But just to clarify, it was a (failed, I guess) attempt at a bad joke.

Anyway, yeah, of course that $500 isn't locked in. On a serious note though, at least from my point of view, it makes sense if you're a "new" customer. "New" meaning like, you don't have several accounts at another bank that you would want/have to switch over.

For example, I'm with RBC, and have been for many years. If I wanted to explicitly switch to another bank like ATB, Tangerine, etc because I didn't like RBC's service, than that's different. But to go through the process of switching or setting up an entirely new account for a relatively small reward is kind of a hassle, IMO. Maybe it's just me.

Sorry for this ignorant question, but is there a monthly fee on Tangerine's accounts? (I've never looked into Tangerine, but from the tone of their ads and their target market, I would guess not, but if there was, you would eat through that $100 in a short period of time)

I'm now seriously thinking of changing everything over from my current bank (BNS) to Tangerine. BNS charges me $12.95 per month ($155.40 per year) for my chequing account. There is no charge with Tangerine plus I get interest on my chequing account.

To me it looks like there is more upside to doing this than downside.... plus if I do this they will give me another $50.

Just as a follow up to the end of my last post...so my guess was right, there is no monthly fee.

Makes sense, I suppose. Just make sure you read all the fine print. RBC had some promotion going on where you'd get a free iPad Mini for opening a new account. I'm already an RBC client, so couldn't take advantage, but I was skeptical so I looked into it anyway. The account in question had a monthly fee (somewhere between $10 and $15 I think), and from what I read from a Google search, the iPad was the old iPad Mini, not the retina version.

Moral of the story, there's no such thing as a free lunch. I'd be making sure that they weren't making that $50 back somewhere else.

Just an update for those interested in opening a Tangerine account.

Tangerine has deposited $50 into my Savings account and $50 into my chequing account as of yesterday afternoon.

Also, they have taken the "hold" off both my accounts so I have full access to the $300 in both accounts. All this happened within 5 days of opening the accounts.

P.S. Today (July 31) is the last day that you can open a Tangerine account and get the $50 bonus.
