I wish one would get put on my AC Calgary to Heathrow flight in Sept. Wanted to book BA for the 787 but my wife wasn't cool with BA's non-refundable cancellation policy.

Well Air Canada's two class 777 is better than the 787 if you're in economy... both 9 seats across but your seat is an inch wider on the 777. 787 nice to look at from the outside and quiet and all, but... assuming your flight isn't in the first couple days of September you'll have the 767 whose 2-3-2 trumps them both when you're flying with a partner, in my opinion.

BA's playing games with us, I'm not sure the 787 will even come this year. They've delayed it so many times.

As excited as I am to see the a380's come into YYC it got me thinking. Is Calgary really attractive enough to start running the "super" in to with YVR so close? Obviously we are a380 ready once the terminal is operational, but with our current long distance routes being taken care of by the 777-ER's and 787's etc, how many of these monsters will we actually see?

I suppose being ready for these aircraft to come in could expand companies willingness to fly in.. but they just seem like overkill for a relatively small city.

Nevertheless I will likely embarrass my girlfriend when I drag her to see the a380's arrival/departure. I am going to be like a giddy little school girl.

These airlines own the 380-
 - Singapore Airlines

- Emirates

- Qantas

- Air France

- Lufthansa

- Korean Air

- China Southern Airlines

- Malaysia Airlines

- Thai Airways International (THAI)

- British Airways

The only airline that owns a 380 and flies into Calgary is British Airways. I can't see them using a 380 here, just not enough demand.

I think it will be a long time before we see a 380 at YYC.

The field is technically A380 ready right now, but to answer the question... zero A380's for the foreseeable future. I only say that because "never" is too pessimistic.

You are looking at literally the newest airliner in the world, and her first revenue flight was to Calgary. Air Canada's third 787, delivered only yesterday, was here today... adding to an unforgettable year for avgeeks in this city. If only BA could bring us the 787 before the year is through...

Yeah no chance anytime soon, I was just joking and making light of the airport authority always talking about how the new runway and terminal would suddenly make us a super jumbo destination.

I dunno, I mean, Emirates is going to have what, 140 A380's in service in the next 5 years or so?

If they can ever get approval from the Canadian government, we could see a seasonal 1 or 2 x weekly flight to YYC, maybe?

The A380 is not the type of aircraft you deploy on a seasonal weekly flight to a low yield destination. Emirates A380 have 90 first/business seats which pay the bills, and YYC would fill like 10 of 'em.

Granted, Emirates is seemingly trying to take over the world (look no further than the insanely huge A380 order you mention) so I'm sure they're constantly monitoring every possible destination, but they way they currently operate, YYC wouldn't make sense.

If you want to see A380's, I'd suggest a connection in or trip to LAX sometime.

Last time I was in there I counted 6 of them on the ground at once. And of course a bunch of 747's.
