Rode the Axel Merckx gran Fondo on Sunday. 162km, 6600 feet of climbing in 42-45 degree heat. Probably the hardest thing I've done physically. The first 92 km was awesome. 38km/h ave speed riding in a group, which came at a price. Because I was so focused on the pace line , and my turns up front, I didn't hydrate for the heat. At 110-115 it went off the rails. A 5km hill at 10-12% resulted in severe quad cramping. 115 was an aid station and I couldn't walk. They had to ice my quads and fill me full of electrolytes. The last 47km still had the big hill and was 27kms of hill climbing. I had to ice at the remaining aid stations to keep riding. My 5.5 hr goal exploded into 7 hrs. Ouch.
BUT still an awesome event. I've never been to penticton and it was a lot of fun. I just need to not be such a dumbass next year.

Has anyone here ridden from San Francisco to either Sonoma or Napa? I'm tempted to do it this fall.

I've ridden in Sonoma with Gold Medal Plates. It's beautiful there. I would highly recommend it.

I rode Sulphur Springs last night (more like Suffer Springs.... amirite?!) and saw a wolf from 10m away, right on the trail! I've never been so sad to not have a camera and be carrying a dead phone. Gorgeous night, except for the mosquitos.

nice! Wolves are interesting creatures. Had one follow me a few decades back when I was running the trails back in Ft McMurray. Very curious creatures.

I used to work at a Uranium mine in Northern Sask and these guys had a couple of 'pet' ones. They'd take food from the cafeteria and feed them - ended up that they'd eat out of their hands. Stupid idea but amazing to watch this things do that kind of sideways walk right next to you.

Now that the Sue Higgins bridge is open I'm hoping to use a more bike friendly route than Southland/Acadia drive. I need to get from Carburn Park to the Sue Higgins bridge. Any suggestions on a route? Does 18th Street have bike lanes along it? I would prefer to use my road bike but I have a mountain bike if there are areas that just require it.

Just tried it. The path along side the river south of Carburn Park is new to me. Last time I went that way it was a gravel road.

I went up through Douglas Glen as it looked like under Deerfoot Trail wasn't that accessible. It's still better than the way I had to go before. Thanks for your reply.

Under deerfoot is accessible, just follow the worn and obvious path. I ride a mtn bike, so accessibility is not an issue, buy I have seen roadies take the gravel path.....it rejoins the paved bike path, right about mid down the old driving range.

^ i'd rule out almost anything in bragg creek as it usually involves climbing, and dealing with rocks.

the spray river loop in banff may be an option for you. wide open fire road one one side, and slightly tigher double track on the other side.

check it out here: http://www.bikepirate.com/spray-river-loop/

There used to be some decent cruising trails in K-Country near the hotels but I have no idea of what the floods did to that area.

Has anybody cycled the Banff Legacy Trail from Canmore to Banff lately? Is it completely paved and okay for a road bike with slick road tires?
