Reminds me of this John Lennons quote / lyric.

Singers that repeatedly say their own name in songs - Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj, I am looking at you!
Before anybody asks; my car radio reception sucks, and I occasionally listen to 98.5..

I would say Jack White comes close to this generation's "Stevie Wonder" type. Guy has like 10 bands and plays every instrument imaginable.
As far as album sales and what not, no one will ever reach levels of past artists, just because of the way the industry has changed.
But I would also agree that if you're looking for people at the same TALENT level, you will mostly have to go outside the mainstream. Just as an example, saw Hey Rosetta at Folkfest last night and it was amazing. Really incredible how a group of classically trained musican's can bring rock together.
The problem is ever since MTV, every generation has had one or many Justin Beiber types, who are talented but manufactored artists pimped purely to look good onscreen. Madonna, boybands, etc.. all held this title. And so while there are people who are just as talented as Wonder was floating around, they are less likely to be huge successes because the majority of people care less about the talent of an artist and more about how dancable the music is and how hot the singer is.
I do believe this is changing though. People of my generation had to grow up with boybands, crappy dance pop, and terrible gangsta rap, so we all turned to old rock like Zeppelin, Clapton, Stones, etc... for some music with actual soul and I think that is what has bred the rise and popularity of Jack White, Black Keys, and other raw rock groups. Its a good trend right now.

Yeah they were great. And I say that as someone who, while I know who Hey Rosetta are and I've heard a couple of their songs, didn't really know a whole lot of their stuff before seeing them. They blew me away and I was dancing and jumping up and down with everyone else.
When you can see a band you don't know and enjoy it as much as someone who loves them, you know they're good.

Hey, this is great news! Nice to know you're on the board. What do you normally do with noise complaints? I assume you review them all and keep them on file.
I'm pretty sure our downstairs neighbor files a complaint on my place if we're doing anything other than having a quiet conversation. I'd bet the last complaint was angry sounding because it was 10:15 and she started banging on the ceiling and I just yelled back at her to chill the #### out. We were playing Smash Brothers, not heavy drinking and partying like a previous complaint alleged (and I quote... "I'm worried about what will happen when Stampede starts").
As a side note...does the condo board accept complaints about smoking weed making me close my windows? It grinds my gears when she does that.

Fire me a PM if you want. I'm basically volunteering to fill in for the summer months till the next AGM. But I'm in contact with the property manager & such pretty regularly via email.

We have some good threads in the entertainment thread on music. I learn about a lot of new stuff there. I volunteer at CJSW and Sled Island.
I've seen about 50 bands in 2014 so far, and I'm always amazed at the wealth of musical talent (locally and from abroad). There are more talented people making great music than ever before. You have to look harder for it now, because the old distribution methods have collapsed.
I love Stevie Wonder too, but I don't agree no one is making great music anymore. In fact, I worry more that I will never have time to sample even a fraction of the music that is made every year. It is everywhere.

Yeah, what Troutman said.
Not to knock Stevie Wonder, he is one of the all time greats. "Songs in the Key of Life" is about as perfect as an album can get.
But to say no-one is making great music any-more is silly.

Kanye is without a doubt on Stevie Wonders level. He might be a huge d-bag and I hate him but his music is incredible. His lyrics could use some work but his music production is untouchable. If you don't like hiphop that’s fair but read any music publication and it's pretty much unanimous that Kanye is a musical genius. Every time he puts an album out it's critically acclaimed.
As for sales, if we were in the pre-internet days Kanye would probably have just as many records sold. He's one of the biggest musicians in the world...

Honestly, you could say that about a lot of professions these days. I know its not a perfect comparision, but we live in the age of technology, so why bash musicians for using it? (but everyone else can use it, no issue)

Honest question as I know nothing about Kanye's music - how much of it does he produce himself and not without the help of some producing ninja?

A computer may generate the sounds as he doesn't physically play the instruments but he's responsible for arranging and sequencing the compositions. Not to mention writing the verses, bridges and choruses as well. He also programs many of his own drum patterns.
