Yea, that's what I was thinking also.

I know projecting how a goalie will do is very hard, but it doesn't sound like Ramo is in the Flames long term plans (if that wasnt already evident with the Hiller signing)

Unless Ramo badly outplays Hiller.

Yea, that could very well happen, I just put it that way because Ramo is an upcoming UFA, while Hiller would still have one year left at 4.5 million.

Hopefully Ramo has a great year though.

Hopefully we can recoup Ramos purchase price if we do go another route

If Berra is worth a 2nd, Ramo has to be worth a 1st!

I don't know about that - Treliving spoke very highly of Ramo from the day he was hired. Whether or not that means he is in his long term plans is difficult to tell until we see how everyone plays this season.

Treliving will probably deal with the goalie situation on a year by year basis - the best goalies will be the ones to earn jobs.

I believe he was actually behind Nabokov, then Toskala.

So who do we think will be more valuable to trade in 2 years, a 30 year old Ramo or a 34 year old Hiller? We need to keep one until Gillies is ready

I'm not sure why, but I almost imagine Liam Neeson's voice (As Treliving) saying to Ramo... *Cue Taken aura*

"I'm expecting you to play well. But if you don't I will look for you, I will find you and I will trade you."

I hope both are great that we have issues choosing which to trade (edge to Ramo due to age) but other than that, one can only hope. I hope both do well, not one clearly crushing the other and the other regresses. But only time will tell.

I like the 1a & 1b goalie system. It creates competition. With a decent showing by Ramo last year ( very impressive at times ) I think Ramo might kill it this year- especially now that Hiller's in the fold. The next season will tell the tale as to the direction the club goes in net. Signing Hiller was a great move for solidarity in the net. Very good goalie that the younger guys can maybe learn a thing or two from. I love us signing Ortio, he may have to be patient, but his time will come.

CapGeek is reporting that the contract is 2yr, $1.2M AAV. NHL salary will be $600,000 for both years, AHL salary for 2014-15 is $115,000, a significant raise over last year's AHL salary of $67,500.

The overall contract is actually lower then last year as the NHL salary was $630,000 and a $80,000 signing bonus. He also had potentially $130,000 in performance bonuses. This new contract does not have any signing or performance bonuses.

interesting that the Flames didn't list the financial terms when they announced the signing on the website (they also didn't do that when they re-signed Colborne, I believe) ... they have always done that in the past. Something to do with the new management?

I like the structure of the deal, given that it's a one-way in the second year. Shows confidence and trust in the guy they drafted while it will also light a fire under Karri Ramo's behind. Perfect deal IMO ... there'll be a lot of competition between Ramo, Hiller and Ortio going forward with Gillies probably being ready to turn pro next season and be the number 1 in Adirondack when Ortio is promoted. Love it!

Just to clarify: AAV means average annual value (not the total value of the contract). So this contract would be 2yr, $0.6M AAV.

Yes, this is correct, I should have specified that being behind Toskala meant that Kiprusoff was in fact *third string* in San Jose.

It's not something they've always done in the past. The change to include the number was implemented by Feaster. As he said, it's a policy that doesn't really make any sense since the numbers are made public within a day or two anyway.

Both the Stajan and Russell signings included the numbers in the press releases, so the policy appears to have been reverted during this offseason, for some reason. I hope someone asks Treliving about it.

We'll have a bunch of trade-worthy goalies once McDonald is ready.
