Perhaps the are looking to to trade his rights somewhere.
I had actually totally not realized that they qualified him.

2 years $1.9 million total would be my guess.

2015-16 you will probably see Hiller and Ortio in the NHL and Gillies in the AHL. No room for Ramo.

I think the flames are going to need to make a smart trade or two in goal.

Eventually if one of the young guys develops into an NHL caliber #1, yes.

I would be thrilled if we, down the road, had a 1a/1b of Gillies/Ortio.

I can see that happening, just like Andersen and Gibson did to Hiller. Hiller getting bumped twice in a row would be kind of funny .

Goalies are voodoo.

Anybody trying to predict that a goalie will have future success playing at a higher level needs to have their head checked.

Lots of teams don't even know how good their own goalie is, even at the level at which they are currently playing.

SJ had the best goalie on the planet in 2003, and they had him in the lineup behind Vesa Toskala. The Flames dressed Berra 30+ times before realizing he was awful, and based on the same body of work Colorado decided he was good enough to be worth a 2nd rounder.

Forget predicting future performance, its hard enough to tell how good a goalie is right now, when he's on the ice in front of you and playing at the level where you want to evaluate him.

Anyways, congrats Ortio. I'm not going to bet the farm, but we're all rootin' for ya.

Treliving says the deal is 2 way in the first year and 1 way in the 2nd year.

Good let's over ripen them so they have all the confidence in the world when they come up and don't end up like McElhaney.

Im assuming he's waiver exempt this year?

I know its a 1 way deal in the 2nd year, but if it was a two way deal would he still be exposed to waivers?

Treliving said they are free to send him up and down as they need this season.

waiver status is not determined by if a contract is 1 way or 2 way.

it is soley based on what age the player signed his first contract, how many years have passed since signing that contract and/or NHL games played.

there are no re-entry waivers anymore so players are free to be called up from the AHL at will.

I know, I guess I didn't worth that properly, was just curious if he will be exposed to waivers next year or not. He will be 24, so I think he will have to pass through waivers if he doesn't make the team.

No he will not be exempt from waivers next year.

He will also not be exempt from waivers this year after/if he plays more than 63 NHL games this year.

Pretty much guarantees him an NHL spot next season assuming he doesn't crap the bed this season.
