Assuming that they could get a player that would have a significant and long-term impact on the roster in return with Sanchez being part of a package going the other way, yes.
I can't imagine that there is a player available at the moment that is a free agent after this season that you'd trade Sanchez for.
I think it would have been foolish to be closed to the idea of including Sanchez in a package for Samardzija, but that ship has sailed. From where I'm sitting, you'd have to be willing to include Sanchez in a package for David Price, but there are factors at work that make such a trade unlikely:
- Rays won't want to trade in-division, especially if they have other options
- There'd need to be a SIGNIFICANT add to the package that I don't think the Jays have, without a big impact on the pro roster
In the unlikely case that Tulowitzki gets traded, I do think you have to be willing to include Sanchez + in such a trade, not only to acquire a player of Tulo's calibre, but also to address the Jay's dearth of positional prospects at the moment. That being said, I don't think it's too likely that we'll see Tulo in a Jays uniform any time soon.
As frustrating as it can be, the Jays are not only at a disadvantage in free agency for the reasons I posted earlier, but they are also at a disadvantage in trading for players. Every time one of these "Details of So-and-So's No Trade Clause" stories comes out, the Jays are invariably on the list. It adds to the things keeping AA from making trades at the moment. Even if you forget the whispers relating to payroll limitations that are floating around, you can see he's in a tough position at the moment.
They can't pack it in for this year, because then you'd have to tear it ALL the way down Houston Astros style (can't keep any of these players around that you brought in to contend). So you're looking at 5+ years before even considering being in this position again.
If you go all-in for this year and don't make it, you might be looking at the Houston Astros scenario 2-3 years down the road anyway. Even if you want to go all-in, the no-trade clauses that so many potential targets have severely limit the market you have access to.
If you 'do nothing' it makes the fan base angry, unless of course they 'do nothing' and the team makes the playoffs.
I really don't think it's a matter of the team not being good enough, especially with the state of the division this year. I really wonder where they'd be if they were able to stay healthy, and a huge amount of the blame in that regard absolutely HAS TO go to the artificial turf at Rogers Centre. It blows my mind that Rogers and the Jays are placating the Argos, secondary tenants in the
building they own in keeping the astroturf around. It could potentially be costing them millions of dollars in revenue from playoff dates missed and subsequent attendance losses.
