It's an odd comment, because not one part of the article or report in the op even mentioned playing hockey outside. It's an odd comment when the report talks about climate change's impact on water, fuel and health, and doesn't mention rutty Lake ice.

Sheesh. Did you read it?
Did you come just to start and argument? EE never said anything other than he preferred the indoor ice.

We'll have a couple days of -15 to -30 which will be great, but then a week of close to zero temperatures melts all the rinks and they have to refreeze in the the next 1 or 2 days of cold weather and just don't have enough time before warm air hits again. The really good days for being on the ODR have definitely become more few and far between.
100% accurate. This year there were MAYBE 3 months of decent outdoor ice from mid-December to mid-Januray. It used to be November to March was ODR season but the last couple years I've definitely noticed a change. Such a shame, one of the things I love about winter, and IMO one of the quintessential Canadian experiences, is playing posts for a couple hours with your buddies and a few rink beers.

Video Games and Fat Lazy kids are a threat to hockey. Not climate change.

I played organized hockey all the way up to Junior B.

When I wasn't on the ice, we played street hockey outside, even in the winters it would be street hockey.

There were 5 Junior B - Junior A Calibre Level hockey players that were produced on my Culde-sac alone.

Much of it can be attributed from the practice we got playing street hockey almost every day, when we were away from the indoor rink.

will Bettman be putting a Climate change surcharge on tickets?

Out door rinks did not happen by accident, usually some old men volunteered hours of labour making and keeping the outdoor rinks open, Today with the proliferation of indoor ice facilities the importance of keeping an outdoor rink has diminished to the point that the old guys don't see enough demand and usage to justify them wasting their time.

When I was growing up in rural Manitoba.. the old guys would work like crazy and keep us off the ice when we had a Feburary thaw... so that their would be good ice for the Community winter carnival...... Now I imagine they would just shut it down.

It is almost criminal the spin that Global warming fanatics put on an incident to make their case:

"Richter notes, while Ottawa's Rideau Canal closed a month earlier than usual in 2014."

2013–2014 Season: December 31 to March 11, 2014 - 70 days
2012–2013 Season: January 8 to February 28, 2013 - 51 days
2011-2012 Season: January 13 to February 21, 2012 - 39 days
2010-2011 Season: January 8 to March 5, 2011 - 56 days
2009–2010 Season: January 14 to February 26, 2010 - 43 days
2008–2009 Season: January 1 to March 5, 2009 - 66 days
2007–2008 Season: January 25 to March 5, 2008 - 39 days
2006–2007 Season: January 26 to March 12, 2007 - 45 days
2005–2006 Season: January 7 to March 10, 2006 - 62 days

2001-2002 was the shortest Rideau Canal Skateway season, being a mere 35 days long
1971-1972 was the longest skating season ever... Hell almost froze over later that year when Russia almost beat Canada in the Summit series.

Using Richter's 2014 example basically shows that Global warming has become global cooling.

How can anyone now believe anything that Richter has to say on global warming?

Not so much.

The high cost of participation is the greatest threat to hockey.

I disagree.
Didn't you watch D2?
The guy with the "Knuckle Puck" shot honed his skills on the Street Hockey Rink and was plucked from the Ghetto to join Team USA at the goodwill games.

That could happen to your kids if they play their cards right.

The outrageous costs of minor hockey is killing the game much more than global warming.

The biggest improvements in my own hockey skills came from the 3 year period where I was on the ice almost daily. I wonder if the pond I skated on from age 10-12 would be useable past February and before December.

I find it psychologically interesting the contortions people can go through in order to justify their odd beliefs. I wonder if you think the moon landing was faked as well?

Funny thing is, there *is* an answer to this question, the weight is piling on; just a shame the consequences are so high.

threat - a person or thing likely to cause damage or danger.

Climate change is likely to cause damage or danger to the NHL. I would say that is accurate, if you buy into 'climate change'. If you don't then obviously you won't agree with this statement. But then it matters which concept you agree with. Climate change and Global Warming seem to have been merged in recent years, when they should in fact be seperate terms.

The climate has been changing for billions of years (sorry gospel) and it will continue to change long after our time on Earth is done. Global warming implies that man is having an affect on this change and throwing it out of whack. Lets make sure that we understand the difference between those two statements, because I am not sure that Bettman does.

I worked at Sport Chek for a couple years while going to school. The number of kids that would kick and scream for a $300 hockey stick and the parents that would buy them astounded me.

Anytime a parent with an 8 year old kid actually asked me about them I would straight up say "They don't need them. Sorry kid". when they get to 13-15 and have the strength and talent to actually utilize the technology, sure. But for kids using them just as a balancing stick, no, you don't need it.

I wore used skates until my feet stopped growing at about 15 and my dad blew a good $800 on Grafs for me. Every sport has expensive top-end equipment, and I don't have much exposure to youth in any other sport, but it seems like hockey has the greatest stigma for the need of top-end gear for any age group.

The expense of hockey is huge. Especially if your kid is actually good. Parents putting their kids through quadrant Bantam and Midget programs could buy their kid an economy car for the amount they spend in 1 year of equipment and registration/tournament fees.

Pot meet kettle. I have **never** in my life seen numbers more tortured in the defense of idiotic ideas than any time you're trying to prove a point.

How's the Ricardodw Grit Index coming?

It's sort of funny that a business that revolves around jet travel, and uses massive amounts of energy to make outdoor ice in Southern California is talking about being worried about climate change hurting their business..

Not to mention dragging the playoffs out into mid-June.

You can be fat and worried about being fat at the same time; ideally your worry would translate into action...

Maybe all the NA pro sports teams should donate 50% of salaries/profits to building high-speed magnetic rail between all occupied cities.

Arod could pay for a line from LA to NY on his own. Just tell him he can have quicker and easier access to droves of hollywood "talent".
