Most Popular Google Searches by Province

I got a kick out of this, I'm sure most of you will too. The fine folks at Vice have compiled a list of the most popular google searches in 2014 by province. The results are quite interesting to say the least.

Alberta’s list is arguably the most terrifying. Nazis, pregnant porn, gonorrhea, black poop, and racist jokes? Jesus Christ, Alberta.

Below, you will find the results of our exhaustive research, wherein we plugged terms like “anal sex” into Google Trends to find out which provinces and territories had the most “regional interest” in particular topics. Regional interest on Google is decided using a top-secret algorithm that finds out exactly which parts of the country enjoy learning about putting things in their butts the most.

If I understand that correctly, what they did was say "which province searches for 'black poop' the most?" and Alberta was top of that list. It doesn't mean there's an epidemic of people in Alberta crapping out lumps of charcoal.

This sort of research doesn't really tell us anything because they were looking for the horrible search terms and just matching them to the provinces. Of course they're going to get a bunch of horrible search terms to match up with every province if you're already looking for them.

Correct. They looked up the terms, and then checked to see which Provinces looked those terms up the most.

The whole point of the article wasn't "Popular searches" but, out of all this stuff, who leads each category. As in, "Which province is most interested in pregnant porn?"

I don't think you should worry much about the research telling you anything. It's just meant to be funny. It's pretty obvious.

Your being too serious. Unless I missed it, it doesn't say how many people searched for these things. Just which province came out ahead on which (generally) gross search topic. The number searching for Nazi's could be like 500 people or searches for all we know.

As well, using that example, there is no reason that they have to be searching that topic cause they want to join Alberta's skinhead population. It could just be for research, or because they ran into a group, were offended by it, and wanted info on them.

I think Albertans strive for larger penises (not really shocking seeing all the fake boobs, and 50 year old women with their faces pulled back in Calgary especially) as it's Ontario that led in searching for "small penis". Funny article but not at all representative of what the most popular searches would actually be seeing they are using their own chosen topics and just polling provinces for those topics.
