icon57 Prospect Comparables

Seeing as it is Summer, and their is not too much to talk about other then the prospect rankings, I thought it would be neat to have a thread dedicated to NHL comparables for our prospects/other young Players.

To get started:
Sam Benett - Doug Gilmour
Sean Monahan - Jonathan Teows lite
Johnny Gaudreu - Patrick Kane/ Paul Kariya lite
Sven Baertschi - Mini Marian Hossa
TJ Brodie - Drew Doughty (not to sure on TJ)

REMEMBER -- I'm not saying Sam Benetts career will be as good as Gilmour's, I'm saying that he plays a similes style. (Also I'm hoping that's who he becomes )

The words "Tamper your expectations" seem to come to mind. I would be happy if that all turned out though

Hahaha. I mentioned mostly comparing play styles, not saying that Gaudreau will be Paul Kariya 2.0.

Arnold - Yelle
Sieloff - Regehr?

Monahan - a 6'2 centre who has leadership qualities and character. A less physical but more skilled Rod Brind'Amour. Not flashy, but efficient, with good hands and excellent hockey sense. Logan Couture would be a similar player who's active.

Bennett - Gilmour, obviously, though slightly taller & faster. Among active players, there's some TJ Oshie & Mike Richards in him.

Jankowski - has been compared to Spezza in terms of style, which seems to fit. Posting Travis Zajac-like numbers might be more realistic (if he evens makes the NHL). It's tempting to draw a likeness between him & Nieuwendyk, but let's not forget Nieuwy's unbelievable faceoff & deflection talents.

Gaudreau - Steve Sullivan comes to mind, although I remember Sullivan having an edge to him that Gaudreau might not have. For current players, perhaps Daniel Briere. Paul Kariya doesn't work for me, because he was a north-south player with blistering speed and a pounding wrist shot. Gaudreau is more sneaky and quick, right?

Klimchuk - A speedy sniper with two-way acumen like Alex Steen or Patrick Sharp (I think I got that from Dobberhockey), albeit smaller. He could turn out to be reminiscent of Martin Gelinas or Steve Larmer.

Poirier - Taylor Hall minus the stench of Edmonton? Rambunctious, almost reckless, skilled, very fast, determined. For another similar Oiler, see Glenn Anderson. Tony Amonte would be a bit of a more palatable comparable.

Baertschi - To me, the "Mini-Hossa" label only has limited applicability, since Hossa uses his size to bull his way through traffic, and that isn't Sven's style. David Perron seems more fitting; but, again, the Oiler stink. I'm having a hard time finding current wingers who are sublimely skilled, smallish, selectively aggressive, equally adept at scoring or making plays, and need to work on their game outside the offensive zone. Reminds me of a young Mark Recchi (unless memory fails me).

Eric Roy - Al Iafrate? Just came up with that out of the blue. Eric probably doesn't chain smoke or have a male pattern baldness gene, though. Oh yeah, I think someone's said Sheldon Souray, but faster. Let's hope he's not an Andy Delmore (big shot and pretty much nothing else).

I remember watching a young Paul Kariya play and people can call me crazy but I think Gaudreau is more skilled at the same age frame. I think he will be a better player too. Hopefully he does not get rocked like Kariya did.

Based on what I've read or seen: (And this is playing style, I'm not saying player A is a good as player B)

Bennett: Toews - Toews is a comparison that gets thrown around alot, but I think Bennett is probably the prospect to come closest to Toews' playing style. Bob McKenzie and Dan Marr of Central Scouting have both used this comparison.

Monahan: Francis - Red line used this comparable. Both big, disciplined centers with good touch around the net.

Gaudreau: Kane I guess? Both elusive, but highly skilled and consistent wingers.

Baertschi: No clue.

Brodie: Keith, minus the offensive capability.

Klimchuk: Kunitz, excels playing with top players.

Poirier: A smaller but more feisty Rick Nash. Both powerful skaters and can finish with aplomb.

Default Prospect Comparables

I've seen Kanzig play three times and he always reminds me of Regehr.

I'm old enough to remember Gilmour playing and he wasn't a great skater and was not the fastest guy on the ice, that's why I scratch my head at the Bennett comparison. They both play with tenacity but that's where it ends

I'd be thrilled if Monahan could be as good as Brind'Amour...he really needs to work on that faceoff % to be even close though, because Brind'Amour was one of the best in history (with a career % even higher than the aforementioned Nieuwendyk).

I'm not sure, but I think Kunitz might be more of an aggressive hitter than Klimchuk (not that Klimchuk is a shrinking violet). Monahan does look like a Francis - big centres who are leaders, and not the fleetest of foot (but not Andreychuk slow, either). Ronnie Franchise was mainly a playmaker, though, whereas last season Monahan turned on scorer mode. We'll see. Monahan could eventually become Francis's spitting image, which would be amazing.

Granlund: Mike Bossy

Just in his way of finding open space and lightening quick release.

You're probably right about Klimchuk - Sharp is another player I think could fall in that vein as well being good goal scorers and able to play up and down the lineup. Kunitz might be more aggressive, but I think Klimchuk could play the forechecking role too.

In Monahan's case he was highly touted for his playmaking skills in junior.
When he made the team last year, I think he was forced to play the goal scoring role by default because he was the best finisher in the lineup outside of Cammalleri and maybe Glencross. With some decent goal scorers on his wing Monahan might have had a 20 goal/20 assist rookie season.

Just a comparison, I'm not sure Bennett will be as good as Toews or Gaudreau with Kane but it's still a valid comparison.
