Hayes played on the wing with Chris Kreider on the 2012 championship team. I believe he split time during most of his college career playing both positions, but clearly has emerged as a winger. In short, I don't see a very realistic scenario of him returning to centre.

From what I can gather/remember.
Freshman year: played center. recovering from knee injury relegated him to 4th line center for the 2nd half
Sophomore year: started as center then half way through the year on Kreider's line as RW
Junior year: played RW for majority of the year on the 2nd line with Arnold as his center, until injury forced him out
Senior year: started the season as 2nd line center until November when he was put on RW on Gaudreau and Arnold's line

46. For a while now it's been assumed that if 2010 first-round pick Kevin Hayes decides not to sign in Chicago, his first choice would be Florida. That's where his brother Jimmy plays. There are rumblings, though, that the Panthers may choose not to go this route. That makes the favourites Boston (where he went to school) or Pittsburgh (Tom Fitzgerald is a cousin). If he does not sign with the Blackhawks by Aug. 15, he will be a free agent.

Interesting that Hayes' ties to Gaudreau and Arnold is not enough to be worth mentioning. Seems like as strong of a reason as where Hayes went to school or where his cousin plays...

i think the cousin angle is a weak one. Perhaps realizing you may have a chance to play wing to either one of the top flight centers in the league in pittsburgh, which isn't ripe with a lot of budding wingers, is more of a reason to consider them a prime candidate.

I wonder if the media is playing up the relative/friend connection too much but he seems to have a few options if that is an important factor in his decision. Ryan Fitzgerald plays with Boston and it's his hometown, Tom is an assistant GM in Pittsburgh, his brother plays in Florida, his buddies Bill and Johnny play in Calgary, etc. I hope he signs with us but I could see him joining a team that has no previous college or family connection just as easily.

Friedman is usually a really good source. The Pittsburgh connection is news to me.

I'm hearing that Colorado is the front-runner in the Kevin Hayes sweepstakes.

I wonder how that could be. Isn't it tampering to be negotiating with an RFA, which is what this tweet is implying?

Depends on what he means.
He could be saying the Avalanche will trade for Hayes' rights.
He could be saying that Hayes preference is to sign with the Avalanche (for whatever reason).

So apparently, every team but Calgary are the front runners for Hayes.
Flames
Bruins
Rangers
Blackhawks
Penguins
Predators
Avalanche
Oilers
Canucks

i hope he lands with the preds. i am hoping that team grows into a playoff team. i find myself cheering for those small market teams (FLA/NYI/CBJ/NSH) more and more (except for the coyotes who i can't stand ever).

How can there be suitors without it being tampering?

Meaning, that's who he likes. Likely the Hayes camp sending these teams a note at recess that asks if they like him more than just a friend with a yes and no box beside. If you soon see a tweet that Colorado is looking to make waves in the unsigned college free agent market they've checked yes

Can agents be accused of tampering?
If the agent is going around fielding interest from other teams before he becomes a free agent, is that not tampering as well? Even if it's just "Yes, in the event he goes to free agency, we would be interested."

I think only teams. The thanks would have to be very careful how they respond.

I have to imagine that tampering is common occurance in the NHL and that every team does it. It would have to be significant for the NHL to lay punishment.

Some Chicagoans have viewed Hayes' college career as disappointing, especially his first 3 years. Also he struggled with injuries, and had a suspension for violating team rules. Other teams' fans seem much more excited about him than do 'Hawk fans (as a 38 page thread on a Flame forum indicates...'Hayes hadn't been even discussed at Blackhawkzone forums for months).
This is from a Chi Sports Blog linked by the Chicago Tribune... http://www.chicagonow.com/daily-chic...wks-freehayes/
