I think any suit that fits will look better than almost all rentals. I wore a rental as a best man once and the pants were pooling around my ankles. Like a triple-break.

Almost no one notices these things, but I like clothes so it was important to me. Most can and will get away with rentals and everyone will be happy.
I was a groomsman at a wedding last year and had to have a rental from Moore's. It was awful. It looked cheap, felt cheap and was basically made of Kevlar. The good news is that during photos we were at a rustic barn and I stepped on a rotting board and fell down about two feet through the floor. There were a bunch of rusty nails, but the suit saved me, as the nails couldn't get through the pants. If I was wearing one of my own suits, it would have been shredded and my leg would have been a mess. The shoes were also the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn. After the dinner I ditched the outfit and put on my own suit, bow tie and shoes.

Having said that, it looks like I'm going to have to step up my game at formal events as I'm going to be way too self conscious in my usual attire.

Instead of a clip-on tie I think I'll just go with no tie, though.

Was married in 2002 to the guy who asked.
To me the ability to tie a tie is a basic skill a man should possess. Ironing and shoe polishing are also on the list, along with others.

Bolo ties seem acceptable in these parts.

I can tie a tie. It's easy. I just don't want to, although after this thread I think I'm just going to forgo the tie altogether.

Definitely not going to rock the bolo tie, either.

I can't imagine a paramedic wearing a tie.

"Excuse me while I drag my tie through your sucking chest wound."

It would be like a machinist wearing a jacket with fringed sleeves.

How does one tie a clip-on around their forehead when the dancing begins?

You can't do Tiethulu with clip-ons.

I didn't think that they made clipons anymore.

Might as well buy the short sleeve light blue polyester shirt while your at it and the brown pants and just go with the whole ugh look.

Actually forget the tie. Unbotton your shirt down to your naval and go buy some gold chains and go with the whole 6 million dollar man leisure suite look.
