Depends how many km on the X5 and whether you are prepared to shell out for repairs that would by covered by warranty on a newer vehicle.

Oh man, I can't imagine the hassle it would be maintaining the X5. The cost I may be able to live with, but not the inconvenience. As burn_this_city said, though, we'd need to know the mileage.

I'd normally go for the used, but better vehicle. But I would be very weary of the X5, I just know too many people with them that spend way to much on maintaining it.
It has completely turned me off that vehicle, which I otherwise would have likely purchased.

PS I have a 3 series BMW that I am very happy with, but it is the X5 particularly that I personally would stay away from.

140,000 kms? That vehicle is done. I wouldn't even consider it for one second. I'll bet you any amount of money the guy getting rid of it is doing so because he's sick of maintaining it.

I used to have a 2003 X5, it was a good vehicle until I had to start maintaining it with usual repairs. Not worth the money if its 2007 and 140k on it. I traded my X5 in for a 2010 Acura MDX and I am very happy with it.
I also have a 2008 5 series and I love that vehicle and even I wouldn't recommend the X5.

This brings up an interesting point, how long should modern vehicles last? 150km? 200km?
My last two vehicles were replaced at 180km and 260km, so when were purchasing our new car I insisted on less than 5 years/100km, we got around 52,000km on it.
With proper maintenance how much should I reasonably expect from a modern vehicle? Another 100km?

Newer japanese sedan. Way less maintenance. Cheaper to maintain.
A friend has an older BMW 3 series with that many KMs on it. Repairs are costly, and if you go through a BMW dealership prepare to part with your first born.

300-500k if maintained properly. Doesn't mean you won't replace stuff, but the engine and transmission should last that long.

Fwiw, my friend complains constantly about the cost of maintaining his X5. Given that you're on a limited budget you're probably better off with the newer car.

I have a 2008 X5 with about 95,000 kms on it, and I've owned it for about 2 years. I love the vehicle. I don't find the maintenance anywhere near as bad as people are saying, and I get mine serviced at a dealership. I've had my rear brakes changed, a headlight replaced, oil changed, and some other minor stuff. The costs seemed slightly above other cars I've had, but nothing major.
The vehicle is terrible on gas mileage, but I knew that going in. It's an SUV, with the majority of mileage being used in the city, and requires premium gasoline. Obviously it's much more to fill up, and it goes through gas faster, than a Civic, but it's an added cost that I don't mind paying to have the vehicle I want.

I think if you're on any sort of budget, an off-waranty high-mileage BMW is a terrible idea...especially one that's known that have issues. Go for the safe choice for now, and then save up till you can get a better example.

Just dropping by to say that try to stay away from anything older than 2 years. 2012 is fine, 2007 isn't, imo.
What is the budget if I may ask? have you looked at any new vehicles from 2013?

I had a BMW. It starts to cost an arm and a leg once you get off your warranty. It's one of those cars you should probably service and maintain just so you don't have a huge repair turd on your hands later.

The one he is looking at has 45,000 kms more than yours on it. That's a big difference.

This isnt the 70s, vehicles last at least 250-300k before they can be categorized as done.

I was faced with this decision a few months ago. New Toyota/Japanese SUV vs older German luxury SUV.
I went with the Mercedes. The newer Japanese SUVs just feel too cheap/boring/depressing for the same amount of money. I have yet to see the costs of my next major service though (in about 1000 KM from now).

An X5 with 140,000 kms is done IMO. It would be too costly and way too big a PITA to maintain.
