Interesting to see the two newest 2nd round picks not factoring in at all yet. Speaks to the possible depth but usually new kids get a bit more hype early. Could be due to one being a goalie and the other was quickly brushed off as a no talent big guy. I'd think they'd go before guys like Hankowski and Van Brabant, maybe in the 15 range?

In the battle of the goalies I pick Ortio all the way. The guy is already a legit NHL goalie in my opinion. When this team is ready to compete, he'll be our starting goalie.

Gillies has lost some of his shine over the last year. Not sure why but I think he has potential to be a starter at the very least in the NHL. Ortio I don't feel as positive about.

I voted my prospects primarily on their upside so Gillies.

I think Ortio can be our goalie of the future. Not sold in Gillies to be honest. Great college stats, but that doesn't mean all that much compared to ahl stats

Gillies easy for me. Gillies' upside is far better than Ortio's. Gillies has been the best or 2nd best goalie in the NCAA. It's no secret that Ortio's further along than Gillies, he's also 3 years older. Gillies is 6"5' and Ortio is 6"1'. Gillies is very mobile and covers angels very well and has so much potential. Too much to ignore here.

Not sure why, but outside of Bennett, I just can't get myself excited about this years draft picks like I have in previous year. It doesn't mean that they won't turn out well, but apart from maybe Ollas Mattson, I'm having a hard time being interested. There's definitely no Poirier buzz.

Disagree. Poirier and Klimchuk went 9 and 10 last year despite being 1st round picks.

Simple fact of the matter is that most fans don't see them prior to being drafted but after a year of showing what they can do, both moved up substantially even though the pool is much deeper this year.

McDonald also suffers from having 2 top goalie prospects in front of him.

Smith is in a similar boat to Klimchuk - fans haven't seen much of him yet. I expect he will be among the biggest movers for next year's vote.

Went with Gilles last round, going with him again this round. 6'5" cannot be taught and listening to his coach saying he is an athletic goalie vs. a shot blocking wall is a great sign.

I can understand why some would pick Ortio here, he had a great bounce back season last year.

For me it goes Gilles, Ortio, Sieloff, Jankowski. Then the next mix is between Smith/Van Brabant/Ferland for me, over guys like Agostino/Knight/Arnold/Hanowski/Wolf which I'm sure many will choose before the three I have slotted.

It really is great to have such a deep prospect pool that these picks can differ so much between posters.

I am surprised with how many people are siding with Ortio in the great goalie debate.

Yes, he had a great year in Abby, but frankly, so did Irving.

It seems that when it comes to goalies, a lot of people ignore the tools and just look at stats/results.

Gillies is 6'5" has good athleticism, and great fundamentals for a kid his age.

It's like having two defensive prospects where the older one maybe has better numbers but the younger one is bigger and faster.

I had to go with Ortio here, he had a really good season last year, Gillies had a good year with a few bad spots.

A) college hockey vs pro. Harder to project to NHL
B) plays on a defensive team. Lots and lots of examples of goalies in defensive teams with good numbers that weren't as good one they left that team.
C) first really big test (WJHC) he failed quite badly, though he did reasonably well in the NCAA playoffs

If I'm honest, I didn't know there's much he can do in college hockey on a defensive team to get me excited. Too many unknowns for me

You can't disregard Ortio just because you have seen other goalies with great AHL stats bust out. How many great college goalies have never turned into anything?

I like Gillies but until he plays a higher level of hockey (hopefully 2015-16) you have to wonder a bit how much is he benefiting from playing behind a very defensive minded team.

Ortio did also play some games in the NHL last year, and didn't look out of place considering the mediocre defense in front of him. I think he looked more comfortable in his few games than Irving ever did.

And yeah, Gillies perhaps has a higher ceiling, but I think considering how whacky goalie development can be, who knows what happens in the next 2-3 years with him. Ortio has at least made it this far, so you have to give him points for results. Unlike with other positions, even getting to this stage can be hard for goalies.

I am not disregarding him, simply putting his season in perspective. I fully acknowledge that he had a great season, but I also have to acknowledge that there weren't a lot of great seasons prior to that.

Last year, Gillies was voted 4th (a bit early maybe) and Ortio 30th (a little late?). Did that one season really change everyone's opinions of these two goalies that much?

Certainly Ortio's stock was going to rise after he came to NA and had a great year. But I think there is a little bit of 'what have you done for me lately' going on with the fanbase. The reasons that Gillies was voted 4th last year still exist.
