I really don't understand all the objections.
The Flames knew, and everyone on this board who followed or paid attention , that Bennett wasn't NHL ready.
Not because of his level of skill or compete or physical play. He is just a kid who needs to grow, develop physically and put on muscle.
So why or what are we arguing about when that's what he is?
The thing is we don't know, we just think that he probably won't be ready for the NHL. There isn't really a spot for him at centre right now but I wouldn't write him off either. Monahan gained 15 lbs. last summer, so it can be done but that's just one of the variables. We don't know what we have until training camp gets in full swing.
According to the combine he's not very strong. Besides the pull-ups he only managed to do 2 reps of bench press.
RNH managed 6 reps of bench press and we have all heard the opinions on his physical readiness for the NHL.
If Bennett plays in the NHL this season it will be because he is ready skill wise rather than being "physically ready" IMO.
Bennett has more skill than Draisatl. I'd rather have a "weak" player that hits , fights , and stands up for his team. Draisatl shall fit in very nicely with the soft oilers core. Your team gets pushed around every game and they don't look out for each other. That's something I hope a Flame will never be.

He could do no pullups before, not to blow that out of proportion but most professional athletes can do atleast 10, most probably averaging around 20. Monahan was more athletic and you could visibly tell just looking between the two of them Monahan was more athletic at the same point last year. Bennett needs to develop into an athlete and that is nearly impossible to do in a few months, his weight is second to his athleticism.
The game is too fast and physical to be anything but in the shape of an elite athlete. Bennett's got everything you can't teach so him not being NHL ready is not really a concern, he's tenacious and that's one of the most important tools for any player to have. In all likelihood Bennett will have the skill to play in the NHL this season but not quite strong or fast enough to survive the speed. A year or two focused on hockey and getting stronger he'll steal a spot eventually.

I think it's very likely Bennett goes back to Juniors, I think it's also a decision that hasn't yet been decided. Curious, though, where you get your numbers regarding professional athletes and pull-ups? Is this just hockey players, or all athletes?

Having seen Bruins testing, training with mma fighters, research into exercise for over a decade, training with an army lieutenant.
To name a few athletes; Fedor Emelianenko, Zdeno Chara, Jarome Iginla, Georges St. Pierre can do atleast 20. I don't follow football, baseball or basketball so I don't know their training regimens. The average person can do 0 to 1 as they never practice it regularly. I could do about 40 poor form, 15 or so proper form and I'm no professional athlete. If Bennett could do none his upper body is not very strong and thus needs improvement as his shoulders will get injured easily.

So Emelianenko, Chara, Iginla, and St. Pierre form an accurate reflection of "the average"? I don't buy that for a second.

You know what, I think Bennett might be aware that his upper body strength is something to work on.
After the embarrassing amount of media coverage, and knowing how competitive this guy is, I wouldn't be surprised if he came into training camp with arms like tree trunks.

Most professional athletes supported by naming 2 NHL players (Iginla's physical strength and conditioning is well known) and 2 MMA fighters. You exclude football, baseball and basketball. Your sample size is staggering.
Putting an 18 year old kid (who is, and should be, thoroughly embarrassed) up against Iginla and Chara and MMA fighters who are among the best conditioned athletes around, is a little... stupid?
Not that it matters (as Burke and Treliving were able to look past it) but I'm sure Bennett could rip off more pull ups that whatever make believe number you think the "average professional athlete" can do.

Doesn't it seem kind of weird of say "not to blow this out of proportion" and then claim his inability to do a pull-up in that scenario makes him a non-athlete, who is also somehow not fast enough due to his inability to do a pull-up (which he did a large amount of following that embarrassing moment).
Plus comparing him to Monahan who was a year and a half older, and then "average" athletes like Chara, Iginla, and St.Pierre...
Maybe I'm missing the proportional part of this.

I wonder how many pull ups CC Sabathia could manage...
I think the inclusion of many baseball players into the "average professional athlete" nukes AcGold's statement. Mike Trout? He could probably do 1,000. John Kruk, Pablo Sandoval, Dioner Navarro, Prince/Cecil Fielder, Bartolo Colon, David Ortiz, David Wells? I don't think they could get 20 between all of them.

That and the fact he was one of the youngest in the draft class. If he still can't do a pull up in 8 months I will personally bump this thread. Oh wait he already did a bunch in Philly. This pull-up thing needs to die.
