The reason brides nowadays insist upon uniformity is because in England, they would (sometimes still do) dress in morning dress for formal occasions like weddings. There are rules for morning dress, but at least you still tie your own tie!
The tradition of having the wedding party dressed all identically is a basterdized version of morning dress passed down from tuxedo rental store to wedding planner to bridal magazines to compulsive handwashing brides and so on. That's the reason groomsmen are wearing matching fuchsia pocket squares like some weird row of robot clown car salesmen. Wearing a matching costume doesn't look better, it looks absurd. Anyone getting married will lose many battles with their bride-to-be, but try to win this one!

While there is some truth to the lineage of why there is uniformity and the purpose, the practicality is completely being ignored here. The fact is than in a wedding party of 5 guys probably 3 or 4 don't even own or for that matter want to own a pair of decent black shoes. They don't want to make the effort to learn how to tie a tie. It is like wedding parties I see that are all wearing they're purchased suits and one is a 2 button from 1998, one is a 3 button from stitches and the groom has a suit from banana republic. That's not a great look either.
The fuchsia wearing robot clown renters who go to Moore's do get the look they deserve, but all rental is not bad and there can be some high quality stores that provide self-ties and promote it. There can be really cheesy pre-tied and really high end pre-tied black ties for those that just need it.

I'm sure you are right in theory, but I've never seen a rental that I thought was decent. I bought two of my groomsmen their suits for a couple hundred (banana republic outlet) each as a gift and the third wore his own. I helped them tie their ties lol.
I think any suit that fits will look better than almost all rentals. I wore a rental as a best man once and the pants were pooling around my ankles. Like a triple-break.
Almost no one notices these things, but I like clothes so it was important to me. Most can and will get away with rentals and everyone will be happy.

Tie and no jacket gives off a bank teller, bar mitzvah, wife-dressed-me kinda vibe. Short sleeve button-ups are also mostly tough.
If you insist on not wearing a jacket, then I would wear a long-sleeve tucked in. Make sure your pants are properly hemmed and the shirt fits. This outfit will never look as good as if it had a jacket though. If you insist on short-sleeves, then definitely lose the tie.
If you are stunningly good looking (are you?), then you can tell the rules to shove it and wear what you want.

How do you wear a clip on around your head at the end of the night?

If you wear a clip on, how can you get it tied around your head later in the night?

So...you wear a short sleeve dress shirt and a clip-on tie, but you abandoned your old jacket because it went...out of fashion? I've never been one for fashion myself, but I'm pretty sure that's not it.

Since we're talking about acceptable fashion now, am I allowed the wear the vest of my three piece suit without my jacket?

Once you're at the intoxication level, of being unable to drive home, then yes.
Until then, keep it on, do the pictures, the food, and the dances.
Then do the booze.
Then take off the coat.

If you wear a short sleeved dress shirt and a tie to a formal event, you are Homer Simpson which is why he was given that combination as his work dress. It was as much joke in 1989 as much as it is a joke in 2014.
What year was your wedding?
To be fair, I have real ties but I love clip-ons. Police officers and military officers wear clip-ons so I don't feel any shame in wearing one. They are useful for some situations and are handy. I have several but they are all 20-30 years old I inherited them from my grandfather who bought them in the 80s. The funny thing is that those styles are now back in style.

Coppers, paramedics etc wear clip ons because they don't want to get strangled, full stop only reason.

Of course, end of the evening sleeves rolled up but tie has to be kept on and top button done up, women seriously go ape #### over this look, you have to be Rob Ford ugly not to score.

I'm really surprised at how many of you guys are so judgemental about how other men dress. I thought it was only a peter12 thing. I honestly never care or notice what other dudes wear.
Having said that, it looks like I'm going to have to step up my game at formal events as I'm going to be way too self conscious in my usual attire.
Instead of a clip-on tie I think I'll just go with no tie, though.
Was married in 2002 to the guy who asked.

I think that Peter12 is more of the bespoked/sartorial/Niles Crane end of things though. I think the comments in this thread are more for simple common sense that the average adult male should have. I seriously cannot imagine sombody wearing a short-sleeved dress shirt to a wedding unless you always kept a jacket on top and nobody noticed. That's the only situation I can imagine where you could get it away with it. I wear clip-ons sometimes for convenience and if you can get away with it, nobody will notice and it's fine.
That said, if your wife doesn't mind and you haven't minded in the past, then just go with it.
Contrary to what you've said earlier about not wanting to invest in suits, etc. it's not a huge monetary commitment to try to look good for rare occasions. Formal, good looking, (if not long-lasting) attire is now affordable to the point of disposability today. I forgot my suit when I recently travelled out of town to a wedding. I just bought one at H&M there for under $100.

Van Heusen at Crossiron Mills is dirt cheap for stuff like that. Buy something cheap (like a t-shirt or pair of socks) at the Calvin Klien store and you get a discount coupon for Izod and Van Heusen. I've bought almost a week's worth of clothes for a vegas trip there for sub-300 after discounts.
