went with arnold; just a gut reaction because i know that he won't be the consensus choice here at this pick.

every time i read about the guy i think that he has the potential to step in and help this team, and i think he has been in johnny hockey's shadow a bit as well.

i am pleased to note though that the choices become really tough now because there is alot of quality in alot of the players left.

funny that when i was mulling the list over, it is totally unrealistic i know, but how would all of the players look on the ice together? that might well be a passing resemblance to the flames in the future...that and mcdavid.

My gut says they won't though, as his development curve seems on target to me ... just lost in the other names.

After comparing Jankowski's sophomore year to Knight's sophomore year what is the basis for being satisfied with his development curve.

Because of the slow development Jankowski will almost certainly be playing his full 4 years. If he does a Kevin Hayes and gets a ppg this coming season and then 1.5 ppg his senior year why would he sign with the Flames rather than picking his team on august 15 , 2016.

If he finishes his senior year with under a ppg then the 2nd round pick seems like a good deal for the Flames.... more than he would bring on the open market.

Is Corban Knight right now worth more than a 2nd round pick? Will Jankowski be as good a prospect as Corban Knight has become in 3 years time?

The Flames most recent 2nd/3rd round picks:

2014 - McDonald, Hunter Smith, Hickey
2013 - Kanzig
2012 -Sieloff, Gillies
2011 - Granlund, Wootherspoon

don't know about this year's picks but the 5 before have a better chance to play in the NHL before 2012 #21 overall pick (by quite a bit) than Jankowski.

It's worth pointing out that Corban Knight was 20 years old during his Sophmore year while Jankowski was 19. Both are September birthdays too.

So you should compare Knight's 1st year stats to Jankowski's 2nd:
Knight had 13 points in 37 games (6G + 7A), Jankowski had 25 points in 39 games (13 goals and 12 assists).

Knight became a PPG player during his 20, 21, and 22 year old seasons. It will be interesting to see what Jankowski does this year entering his 20 year old season.

Jankowski played his sophomore season a full year younger than Corban Knight was when he played his.

Great post AC. Age matters, you always have to compare apples to apples.

I considered Wotherspoon and Seiloff but went with Ortio, This guys progression the last 2 years makes me think he could be a starting caliber goaltender soon.

I'm glad someone else brought up this possibility as I didn't want to mention it. I think people are finally coming to the conclusion that we shouldn't rely on Jankowski to be the next Nieuwendyk.

My next pick is going to be Ortio. He had an outstanding season in Abbotsford and is close to making the big club. It's not that I don't like Gillies, I have him 8th on my list but he's too far away from the NHL.

It's too early to really bother thinking about it. In the coming seasons Janko will either prove his worth or he won't, we can make an informed decision then.

It is nice to know that a second can always be had for the guy though.

Does anyone know if there is a data source somewhere that looks at the age a player breaks into the NHL vs. the longevity and productivity of their careers?

It seems to me that most regular NHL players are established NHLers by the age of 22 or 23, and it become rare after that point that a rookie older than 22 or 23 becomes a good NHL player (at least as far as forwards go).

I have no proof to back that up though, it's just based on anecdotal information. Can anyone prove this right (or wrong)?

.
Who is relying on that?

Hell, it's been stated a number of times since we've drafted Bennett, by a number of different posters, that since we have Bennett and Monahan now it takes a pressure or fan expectations off Jankowski down the middle to develop and turn into whatever player he will become.

I think the better comparison is Joe Colborne. Similar age in college. Both from a lower league and similar size but Joe scored at better than a PPG in his sophomore year. It still took Joe until his sixth year after his draft to establish himself in the NHL.

It's almost impossible to find a comparison for Jankowski, someone who made the leap from Canadian High School hockey to NCAA leap.

It's hard to predict how these 4 year college guys will do. I was pretty excited about Knight and he had an ok season in the AHL but nothing special. Agostino's production in college stalled in his final year. His 2nd and 4th year production was basically the same. I don't know what his linemates were like but that's not usually a good sign. In his limited ice-time with the Flames last season he didn't really stand out. Putting him at the 12th-16th spot is fair imo.

I would probably put Wotherspoon, Ortio, Gillies, Arnold, Ferland, Jankowski, Reinhart, and Sieloff ahead of him.

The goalie voters are going to have to vote strategically if we want a goalie to win next round and not split the vote.

or you just don't like the comparisons because they aren't flattering. There is coming a time Jankowski has to step up without excuses. This season will be big.

What's wrong with Colborne?

Am I wrong it's difficult to find comparisons for Jankowski?

IIRC Estrada was the first to mention the Colborne-Jankowski comparison over a year ago, didn't have a problem with it then, don't now.
