Default Rule change: Euros

Folks we are dumping this rule:
Any player who has played in Europe for 3 years or more as shown on hockeydB is retired and must be bought out.

Moving forward as long as the player is active in pro hockey anywhere in the world they are eligible for CPHL play. Be aware - those players not in the NHL though will be HAMMERED in ratings.

Any former NHLers now in Europe previously impacted by the Euro rule will be dealt with as part of free agency.

With specific regards to Ilya Kovalchuk - CBJ will have first right of refusal to match any offer made to him. This is a one-off situation.

Questions?

Not to use Kovalchuk as example but didn't Kovalchuk retire from the NHL

Are we changing the Euro rule AND the retiring from the NHL but still playing overseas rule as well

Kovalchuk wasn't really part of the rule you are referring to

Yes - the rules are changing so that if a player is still playing pro hockey they are eligible for CPHL play. This trumps any statement of "retiring from the NHL" going forward.

I expected this thread to be about how the salary cap will be displayed in Euros instead of Dollars.

Rule makes sense, but how long will you wait to see if a player plays overseas after they "have retired from the NHL"?

Yeah that's a good question. There will also be grey areas in these rules. If the player says they are retiring from hockey with no indication that they are continuing in Europe, we will assume they are done.
If the player says they are retiring from the NHL but suggests they are heading overseas we will assume they are not retired.

Going of memory (which holds no value) I believe the cases like Jagr and Kovalchuk we already knew they were going to play overseas before they were retired from the CPHL

I don't think it's much of a grey area

Read and understood the change. Think it's for the better as well.

good point.

The ones that it would matter on are probably players of lesser consequence.

I like the change, though I doubt I will run into it in any situation I can think of. But it makes sense. Hockey players are hockey players no matter which league they are playing in. While the CPHL is based on the NHL, it is not exactly the NHL. As well, we recognize other leagues anyway, and sometimes a player that has not played in the NHL finds their way onto our roster (though, as here, crappy ratings). So no reason that 'retiring from the NHL' has to be a rule for anything.

"Moving forward as long as the player is active in pro hockey anywhere in the world they are eligible for CPHL play. Be aware - those players not in the NHL though will be HAMMERED in ratings."

What about players who didn't play a full year anywhere. Will they be considered retired?

Not unless they are called retired somewhere. In those cases they would also be hammered in ratings unless they didn't play for injury reasons.

It's frustrating that some players announce their retirement and others do not. In my case Jose Theodore is a French TV analyst but in the back of his mind still thinks he might get a shot.

Do nhl players really have to announce they are retired?

In cases like that the only thing we can do is refer to their Wikipedia page where he is referred to as a free agent

If that is the case does Steve Sullivan count as retired?

in that case, I think we can retire Leafs goalie J.S. Giguere from the CPHL as well.
