The number is not necessarily between the two. Technically it could be outside the numbers provided.
When I'm king of the world, each side will present a number and the arbitrator will have to choose one of the two. Will cut down a lot of the BS and more reasonable numbers would be provided.

First player settles before arbitrtiation:

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
First pre-arb settlement is Ekholm (NASH). Two years, just under $1.1M AAV.

Wes Gilbertson@SUNGilbertson5 mins

Chatted with #Flames RW Joe Colborne today. Not surprisingly, hoping to hammer out a contract before his Aug. 1 arbitration date.

#Flames Joe Colborne: "I really want to be part of this team and I know they really like me, so it makes negotiations a lot easier."

@FriedgeHNIC: In arbitration, player and team must submit figure 48 hrs before hearing. First to go is Cody Franson (TOR)...

@FriedgeHNIC: Franson has submitted $4.2M. TOR has submitted $2M. They can still settle beforehand.

Franson thinks he's worth $4.2M? Woah.

Bah. He thinks he is worth ~3.5 Toronto wants to pay him ~2.7. Both sides are posturing.
That's what gives this idea merit.

Essentially 0%.

So Colborne will get a contract for at least another year shortly.

Colborne won't get more than $1.5 million in arbitration. 28 points doesn't get you a big deal.

According to @FriedgeHNIC
Antoine Roussel's camp is asking for $2.35M in arbitration, while Dallas has countered with $1.15M.

I might be in the minority here, but Antoine Roussel is the kind of pest I would like on this team... He hits, fights, gets under the opponents skin, and can chip in offensively. He's a very useful 3/4th liner.

Yeah, the Stars got a gem fourth liner in Roussel. I've always liked the way he plays.

Everything is relative. Players aren't putting up big offense around the league. Nobody topped 100 points except Crosby, whereas 5 years ago there could be 5 or more players above 100 points.

Similarly, 28 points on the Flames isn't bad, given our best player put up 57

Sorry if it's been addressed and I missed it but does the NHL use an either or system (ie judge has to chose team amount or player amount) or is the judge free to award whatever number he sees fit?

The arbitrator is free to award whatever he sees fit.

3 things you need to know about NHL salary arbitration

Quote:
When a National Hockey League player has accrued enough professional experience (it varies based on the player's age when he signed his first NHL contract), he becomes eligible for salary arbitration.

The NHL's arbitration process is formal, rigid and conventional (as opposed to the final-offer arbitration process used by Major League Baseball), but it serves to provide eligible restricted free agents with additional leverage in negotiations. There are currently 17 players and 13 teams with arbitration hearings on the docket, with hearings scheduled for the two-week period beginning July 21 and ending August 1.

Here are three things you need to know about the NHL's arbitration process:

Ahhhhh let the bum walk!!!!

I am kidding. However if they use Engellands contract in an arbitration hearing we might just have to let him walk lol!

Still not a bad rookie year from the kid but......He is in tough to make this team. We have 5 guys or more in the minors that could put up his point totals easily this year.

Yet big = Good, right? I hate Colbornes first step ( so slow ), hate he is a big man and doesn't use his body. Yet it was his rookie year. He got better as the year progressed. To be Honest Monahan was driving me nuts too. Wanted to see these guys get physical and fight for the puck. Later in the year they did that. How much did having Westgarth help them? Seriously, these young guys played soft like butter till that trade.

Regardless, lots of protection out there now. Not ready to give up on Colborne. 1 more year, with confidence and protection. Slow first step definitely, but shootouts he proved the kid definitely has some great hands.

Hope he is a late bloomer. Flames are handling him the right way too. Every chance to succeed he will get. Its up to him now!

What is the lowest price point and compensation for signing RFA's? That is the max that Colborne is worth.
